hi everyone,
i apologise if this has been asked before...
im a student on a tight budget and im interested in getting broadband for my room. the problem is all these companies require me to have an active BT phone line for me to set up an account with them...which i dont have. i called up BT and they charge something like £35 for the quarter.
does anyone know if i can get broadband without having to activate any phone line or have a house phone? its just that ill end up paying for line rental with BT and on top of that the monthly charge for the internet connection! its all too much!!! :A
ill be grateful to anyone who can help.
thanks

Only via cable.
ADSL broadband requires a telephone line therefore you need to pay somebody (BT) for access to and maintenance of that line.
You are right - it is far too much - It should be a couple of pounds a month instead of 10 IMO.

Ali,
As Mike just righly pointed out, the only practical way to get broadband without a landline is from a cable company. I myself do not have a landline in my house, but I do have a 2mb broadband connection from NTL.
The best thing to do is go to https://www.ntl.com and pop in your postcode to see if you live in a cable enabled area. You DO NOT need to take out any other services if they try and sell them to you - I have the cable modem from them and that's it. Knowing NTL they'll probably try and sell you the TV, phone and net package, and by all means take them if that's what you're after, but remember that you're not obligated to do so.
Additionally, if you're not in a NTL enabled area, have a look at telewest who also offer cable broadband access.

It is an alternative to ADSL true phone line or NTL - its wireless broadband, no need to have BT phone, ntl or whatever!
I'm using NTRbroadband, 512 speed-£15 pm, but they operate only in Northern Ireland. Check out this http://www.ispreview.co.uk/review/top10.php - you'll find and top10 wireless broadband providers. Limited areas covered, but maybe you'll find a company in your area.
I've got an antena outside my house, works well in sunshine and rain
another company which is not mentioned in my link above is https://www.now.com - £14 pm for 512 speed:hello:0
