having problems with signal with Nokia 6500 classic on 3

I have a Nokia 6500 classic on 3 and am having a lot of trouble making calls. I very often find that there is no network coverage when other networks have no problem. I also find that the battery usually only lasts 1 day. 3 say that the network is a problem with this phone and that is why the battery is lasting such a short time as the phone is trying to find a signal. Is anyone else having this problem? 3 are offering a Nokia 6120 or a Sony w880i instead. Can anyone tell me what their experience is of these phone’s signals strength and battery lives on 3 network.

Have you turnt the phone onto GSM, or kept it on 3g? Go into settings, think one of them says network, and in thre you can put it on gsm - most signal problems just need that doing to it.

I get the same problem with my 6500 classic on three. If it's a known problem is there a chance of changing the handset for something else?

Yes, it's worth trying with 3 as they've offered me the 2 alternatives. I haven't taken them up on it yet however so until I get the replacement, I can't be sure they'll honour what they've told me.

thanks for the suggestion. 3 have told me that it's not worth repairing as this is a common problem with the Nokia 6500 but what I'm not yet clear of is which of the alternatives on offer are better for signal strength and battery life, the Sony w880i of the Nokia 6120.

6120 is pretty well-regarded in general. Only problems are fiddly keys and it can get a bit warm.
