Has anyone been using this beta service which allows you to send 50 texts per month over the web. ? It has recently stopped working and I can't find anyone in BT to give me any info as to whether it has been stopped or is just playing up at present

I just tried to register for the service and, though they are supposed to text through an activation code to your mobile "within a few minutes" I haven't received one after more than 30 mins, so I guess something has broken and nobody has noticed.

The service has been in "beta" for ages - the "SMS self-service" aspect has been on a "6 month trial" since early 2006, but the web to SMS gateway was available as a trial for years before that. But I'd forgotten about it, so thanks for the reminder. Seems like a good way to save money - if/when it works!

To be honest, I think it's a bit of an embarrassment to BT and the other network operators because it raises the question "how can BT afford to offer this free?", which leads on to the realisation that we are all massively overcharged for text messages compared to the costs the operators incur. A recent analysis showed that, bit-for-bit, PAYG customers pay more for their SMS texts than it costs to transmit data from the Hubble telescope back to Earth....

BT still haven't got back to me so I've sent an email to their top man. Did that a couple of years ago over an additional line installation issue to the then CEO Ben Verwayen got brilliant service and a lump of compensation

It's not now! If I try to register my mobile I get "Error 500 -- Internal Server Error", so it (or at least its registration page) is still unwell.

Have a look at the status of sent messages - mine for the last 3 days say "partial success" and they are not getting through

Now I've checked, it does show 'partial success' for the only message that I tried to send this month.

I can still use Orange for 30 per month per SIM card. ;) Though of course, you don't get the slightly strange voice message/landline capability. :)

So there you go it is't working - in BT speak "partial success" means your message wasn't sent.

Mr BT CEO has said he will have it looked into - I'll post any response

Mines since the 2nd July . I never knew that you could see if they had been sent .
