Getting a new phone - some advice please
I'm getting a new phone for my birthday in a couple of days time (it's arrived but I'm not allowed to play with it yet - but I might be allowed to activate it if I'm good!)
The new phone was bought from the Orange shop on Dolphin PAYG - so I can get 300 free texts on a £10 top-up.
I already have an Orange PAYG SIM and a Virgin PAYG SIM and am not sure about whether to transfer one of my existing numbers to the new phone.
Am I right in thinking that when I phone Orange to activate the SIM I'll be given a new number? Depending on how memorable that new number is I'll decide whether to keep it or use one of my old numbers. Do I have to decide on activation whether I want to transfer my number?
If I decide to transfer one of my old numbers then
(i) how long would it take to transfer from Virgin?
(ii) how long does it take to transfer the Orange number and would I retain my existing credit from the old number?
(iii) if I transfer an old number will I still get the 300 free texts from the £10 top-up that had to be bought with the phone?
(iv) how does the £10 top-up get applied to the phone? Will Orange know when I phone up to activate the SIM as I have no paperwork for the phone as it is a present?
Please help somebody - I know I'm probably being a bit thick!!

Hi
Your new SIM card with your new phone will already have a phone number assigned and it will be written on the card. Orange may have a policy about transferring numbers from one of there SIMs to a new orange number-but their customer services should help you with some of these points. If you wanted to transfer a virgin number to an Orange PAYG SIM you would first need to get a PAC number from Virgin and then arrange with orange to have the number transferred over, assuming they do that with a PAYG SIM. Doubt if you could transfer a credit. But these questions should easily be answered either on the phone or at an orange shop0 -
There was no phone number with the new phone - does it get issued when I activate the SIM?0
