Hiya Guys kinda new to all this as just been accepted as an undergraduate!!!
What I'm wondering is which is the besy bank account for a mature student as i guess the Nat West railcard is no use for older students!! Age discrimination surely?
Any ideas? Thanks

Have you read the terms and conditions with regards to the rail card or spoken to anyone at Nat West?
A student is a student, mature or other wise I would think and very much imo.0 -

Why would it be no use? As long as you are a student and can prove you are a student then legally they cannot discriminate against you0 -
yer you can get the rail card but you will need the uni/college to sign the form stating your a student.
I dont think i want a student account I just dont fancy a huge over draft.Debt free and plan on staying that way!!!!0 -
i still have a 'student' railcard at 27. it's actually a young person's railcard (well now officially called a 16-25 railcard!) so anyone under 25 can get it and anyone who is in full time education. you have to get a photo stamped by the university and a lecturer has to sign the form and the photo. full details on the official website:

i'd also hold off a little bit before picking a student account - not all the banks have spelt out their offers yet. martin always does an article every year reviewing them, so when that's out all the info will be in one place!!:happyhear0 -

You can still have a student account though , you don't have to accept the overdraft facility.:D0 -
Thanks Melancholly, I didn't know the railcard was available to students over 25 so I wasn't going to take their offer.

I'm sure I heard that instead of having the rail card you could get the £100 instead!
not sure but maybe worth ringing the bank and ask if it's an option.
I did look at that offer but I don't take the train much at all (no parents to visit! and only visit a few friends 3/4 times a year which cost max £20 ticket)
might stick with the HSBC - but then again I'll wait until they bring out this years student offers :-)Light bulb moment April 07: [strike]£3,655 [/strike] Oct 07: [strike]£2,220[/strike] now 0 - 3 years of Uni debt to be added at a later date
now at Uni as a Mature student -update: now has a First Class BA!0 -
£100 seems like a poor alternative for the railcard which is probably worth about 3 times that.0

the rail card would cost £100 for 3 years - usefull for people who take the train a lot whereas I don't.
I'll keep my eye out though when the offers come out as might be more practical freebies for me - don't mind too much about the overdraft amount as I dont' want the full amount anyway - will be trying not to run up to much debt!Light bulb moment April 07: [strike]£3,655 [/strike] Oct 07: [strike]£2,220[/strike] now 0 - 3 years of Uni debt to be added at a later date

Just to put a bit of perspective on the price of a "young person's" railcard - I got mine for £12 this year (in March - ish). The current usual price is £24 for 1 year. So 5 years would be worth £120 at full price. Plus, I think you only get it for each year you are a student up to a max of 5 years.
I think this is the case with NatWest railcards. Of course if you're not gonna use it then nab the £100!
If I have got any of my info wrong don't hate me!
I agree with melancholly's advice though - wait until Martin has written his new schpiel about student accounts before you decide.
Hope this helps,
