How to shorten light fitting on ceiling?

It can be a bit more difficult shortening it at the fitting
1) you are working up a ladder (or heaven forbid on a chair)
2) even if you are not working above your head you are working at a difficult level
3) Not only does th cable suffer from the heat (remember a 100 w bulb produces 1/10th of the heat of a 1 bar electric fire) This can age the fitting quite quickly. Ive had several old fittings fall apart when I tried to disassemble = a good sign that they need replacing
Electricty is easy - if you understand it - just a case of knowing your limitations - unfortunately only your relatives may find out your limitations :-) !
If you understand what looped through lighting connections means then you'll be fine - it isn't rocket science.
Great general advice
a) always isolate a circuit
b) always check it is isolated
c) if you doubt your expertise ask
d) if there any any exposed metal parts then check a b & c again esp c
Unfortunately there are a lot of fools around which has lead IMHO to the ridiculous situation where the regulations for electricty (where I can only kill myself and my family) are stricter than for gas where I could take out the whole street!
Yorkshireboys advice is pedantic and aimed at the fools as all electrical advice should be. Anyone who has any doubt ask 10 people if the rose is still live when you turn the wall switch off - just one proves his point!TANSTAAFL !0 -
