How to shorten light fitting on ceiling?

How do i shorten a pendant light to the ceiling so it's not hanging down too much near our heads
I'm talking about this kind of fitting..is it best to get a proffessional in to do it?

Firstly turn the electricity off, double check that you have done so. Remove the rose i.e. the big round bit and locate the connections. Remove the wire making a careful note of where the wires were. Cut the wire to length. Strip the new bits of wire and reconnect. Turn the mains back on.
NOTE treat electricity with respect and it won't harm you.
