Character Reference

Not sure if this is the right forum but I'm trying to find out how to get a character reference about someone,
ie, do they have previous convictions or had charges against them. any help would be appreciated. Ashes

can i just ask why you are after the character reference? Only if it was for a job then you would follow the HR protocol and refer to the application. Seeing as you have not done this i am a little wary as why you would want this?

An unsavoury character is trying to get custody
of my sisters Grandson and we know
he has been sacked for downloading !!!!!! on the Internet
so we need to find out about this guy.

oh good grief. Can you ask the police about how to access the sex offenders register? Not sure who is allowed access to that.
Also - why not pretend you're an employer & ask his previous employer (the one who sacked him) for a reference - get them to fax or write to you. They're unlikely to be really nasty but you could ask for specifics on why his contract was terminated & they have to tell you the truth...

I need to know how to get results without the pretence, but thanks for your thoughts though. Ashes

I think you will find that a great majority of the adult population have downloaded !!!!!! (albeit not at work)! I don't see the problem in this?

The police can do a report, you would however need a legal reason, as well as the persons permission, which he is highly unlikely to give.

At the moment you have no legal right to the information and previous employers shouldnt go into the specifics of why someone was sacked.

I am not looking for the information myself, my sister is, so I'll pass on

Before you get your hopes up, the reasons given are in the data protection act, and I dont think a character assassination is one of them

Your sister will struggle to find any legitmate source to give you the info you want.

If its not too nosey, why is he trying to get custody? Presumably there must be some reason for it.

Downloading !!!!!! doesn't mean he's a child molester (just pervy) - but there's no reason why you shouldn't ring social services and tell them you're concerned, your sister can do this anonymously.
Is he really a bad character or just someone you don't like? He might make a good parent.
