    Do you have any children?

How old are both of you?

Am I right in thinking if you work a certain amount of hours/earn a certain amount of money, your girlfriend (if she moved in) would lose IS?

    That is correct.

OP, you need to check the maximum LHA that you may be entitled to. Check here for the one bed rate for your area. Let us know that and we can see if you will be entitled to anything.

we are in a 3 bed place cos we have 5 children between us and my girlfriends 3 out 4 children were going to be moving in too but due to medical reasons that cant happen and we dont know how long this will go on for.

this was the cheapest place i found in our area so went for this, to be honest i couldnt afford to move out of here.

In that case you need to check the LHA rate for a one bedroom property in your area on the link above. If you let us know the rate we can see if you will be entitled to anything.
