No Room On Hard Drive

  • You shouldn't loose any data in converting FAT32 to NTFS having said that I wouldn't attempt it without a decent backup just incase. AFAIK you can't convert NTFS back to FAT32.

Now might be a good time to invest in a cheap second hard drive or external...

The other option is to backup everything up, and start again.

  • Also no reason why changing to NTFS would require any further Microshaft purchase.

  • How to convert FAT32 to NTFS...

    Start
    Run
    type CMD

VOL C: (brings up drive info)

Note the name of the disk in the first line, and the Volume Serial Number (for example, 105E-94B5) in the second. Then type:

    CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS

It will ask for that name in confirmation. It will ask two further questions. Reply Y each time to set up conversion to happen at the next boot, then restart the machine. If you are converting a partition other than the operating system’s partition it should run without rebooting. After returning to Win XP, the hard disk will work for two or three minutes, tidying up. Don’t touch the pc give it a chance to finish!

Replace C: with D: or E: depending on the letter of your drive.

Remember to backup anything important first!

I assume you do this anyway...

This is the correct way of NTFS conversion without buying a single thing
one thing that I cant see though is what OS (Operating System) the
Original Poster is Using, i.e Win95-98-98se-ME-XP, so I would just wait
a tick until he/she gets back with that info.......

When you have deleted much of the stuff in the Recycle Bin, you could reduce its size - by default, it seems to be set to 10% of the drive size, which is excessive given the larger drive sizes nowadays - a few megabytes should be plenty. Right-click it to manage it.

The same applies to System Restore (if you're in XP?). I just looked at mine - there are 50; about half are regular system checkpoints - and it is set to 12% of the drive.

If you have large files - photos, video - that you hardly use, but are not sure about deleting, store them on CD or other removable media.

I forgot to say - if it is XP, and you've had it a while, it is possible to remove the back-ups for SP1 and SP2 installation. Somewhere, I've got an email from Microsoft that points to articles about this re SP1.

If anybody is interested, I'll try and find the references.

People more expert than me may like to comment on the ease and wisdom of this, as I haven't done anything yet.
