No Room On Hard Drive

Can anyone help, I have got no room on my hard drive even after deleting all the programs and files I dont need. Is there anyway of compressing the data I have to avoid having to buy an external hard drive or upgrade my existing memory.

Also I use AOL broadband to access the web, but I would like to use Mozilla. However, whenever I try to access the web through Mozilla I have to sign on through AOL and keep the window running. How can I access the interne with only Mozilla being open?

ccleaner cleanup

Try ccleaner, or cleanup. These will juink any lurking temp files.

A external hd isn't too expensive - 250gb about £95

You can get 80gb internals for about £30-£40 now.

Depends what OS you are running. Right click on your drive in explorer, choose properties, Do you see a checkbox at the bottom 'compress drive' .... although it's not recommended on your primary disk. I've heard that AOL 'hijacks' your system, so you are going to have difficulty running Firefox with it

you might want to try the windows cleanup option before any of the ones above - it's available on the drive properties dialog - go into windows explorer, locate your hard drive and right click on it - select properties and if you run xp you should see a button labelled 'drive cleanup'.

this will be less effective than the others but it will also not allow you to remove potentially important files - if you are tech savvy then ccleaner is great but there have been instances of people just deleting everything it brings back and doing damage as a result

also, once you get to the point where you have enough room to do so (15% free space) then i would strongly suggest you defrag the drive - that may also free up some room.

depending on the size of the drive you have at the moment the simplest and best option may just be to buy a second internal drive - they aren't hugely expensive now and 80GB should solve your immediate and medium term storage issues i would have thought.

I have a router and it signs onto aol for me so I never have to use the software. I haven't even installed it on this laptop I'm using - AOL takes up so many resources, it would probably crash it!

Try emptying the recycle bin if you havnt alredy

Run disc cleanup wizard if your OS has it.
Archive files which are rarely used.
Uninstall unused program.
Delete off any rubbish.


Buy another hard disk.

It won't do much for your hard drive problem, but ditch AOL ASAP.

They try to keep you in their little world where they can hit you with all their own content, trying to keep you from finding all the good stuff on the Net.

with aol 9.0 you can use the dialler only option without the whole aol program running then fire up opera/firefox, thats what I do also to set your default browser to whatever you want windows to open by default... start---->control panel---->add/remove programs---->set program access & defaults--->custom

But that would reformat the drive & OP would lose everything - and knowing microshaft it would then say he's made a major change to his PC therefore he's need a new copy of XP.
