To install one light and one socket in a porch. The fuse box is about 2 meters away from where they will be in.
Based in Leicester
Quote £80-£85
Sound reasonable?

Yep, looks good to me. Not a particularly long run cabling wise but I think this is still fair. Sockets tend to be around £50-60, lights vary but unlikely to be less than £20.
Have you asked how the socket and any switches for the light will be mounted? Might be worth checking if you want a nice flush fit. Many electricians will surface mount for ease of installation unless you request otherwise. Also remember to ask for a minor works/installation certificate, you'll need to retain these. Your electrician should also have 17th edition (BS7671) and be a member of a registered body.0 -
One more thing.
As the date is now after July 1st the cuircuit being altered should be RCD protected.
The bonding should also be checked prior to work being done
The regs are not retrospective so the existing circuits need not be RCD protected as they are not being altered.baldly going on...0 -
Thanks for that
Not asked about moutning but will sure to ask0 -
andrew-b that is quite simply an amazing quote and not particularly representative of true cost in my opinion. If that included materials and labour then any electrician knocking out work at those prices would be breaking even or possibly making a loss
If it was done safely, excellent news for you though0 -
Dont know how these companys make any money-These prices you are quoting are stupid ok the porch one sounds ok but no Andrew-b,Has the work been done or are you hanging on to see if you can get a better price (joke)OH THE JOYS OF BEING SELF-EMPLOYED!! Can Travel,Will Work For Free!0

good luck andrew
On a personal note. I have my own business, but give only verbal quotes.
if a customer wishes to go ahead then we firm things in writing and a deposit is taken.
I am up in Scotland and I have been in business for 5 years and can count on one hand the times I have been asked for a written quote
I was talking to a spark who is down south and he is always asked for stuff in writing.baldly going on...0 -
I the same and ask for written quote even if just hand written on letter headed. Nothing fancy as then no disagreement at a later stage.
I booked my electrician to do the work at £85 - he doing next Wednesday and travelling from Stoke-On-Trent to Leicester to do the work!!! Cant see much profit being made there0 -
What does annoy me is when trademan come round and then never give you a price! Am still waiting 2 weeks later for a price on a job. My stance is with andrew-b, max of a week for either verbal or written quote.0

Good afternoon: My OH is currently doing down south here what baldelectrician is doing in Scotland. He was finding that too many people were just having a 'look-see' and weren't actually planning on having the work done in the foreseeable future or were just picking his brains for free advice. The majority of his work these days is word of mouth (with the occasional lead from the CORGI site or IPHE) and if the potential client becomes a client then written quotation is provided/forms the contract, a deposit is collected and the work booked. BTW...he has given verbal quotes after lengthy site surveys to 2 MSErs just recently despite being in the middle of a house move, having to dash back and forth from London on other business and squeezing in installer training for several days at Viessmann in Telford... we haven't heard anything back from either one:wall: Glad the admin (me) didn't spend time I didn't have to type up 2 quotes that weren't going anywhere. Nature of the beast.....

PS: The good tradespersons are always busy and you will have to wait to get a site visit and receive a quote, verbal or written.Ask to see CIPHE (Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering)0 -
