the final straw ....

Hi,

I need to let off steam ...

I live in a rented shared house with a group of people, in particular 2 who seem to have no pride and never pull their weight ... at first I would run round like an idiot cleaning up after them and doing all the jobs which need like changing the bin, wiping the kitchen sides down, wiping the stains off the coffee table etc. One hogs the TV constantly and has literally NEVER lifted a finger in the 4 months she has lived here. She is 16, a college student who has been chucked out by her relatives and announced after a month living here she is pregnant

It all got too much after awhile and the other individual started to complain, I suggested a rota and he was adamant that he wouldnt keep to it etc etc... I have tried other methods such as listing jobs which need doing, talking to them etc but none are even remotely effective. Eventually he suggested a cleaner ... I resent having to pay someone to do a job which I can do myself ... and that she is paid more than I am an hour...

He has just come home and said that I owe him £20 ... like err ... hows that???? it was £50 the complete clean/4 is not £20!!! I just said yeh ok. Like an idiot really ...

The fourth housemate only moved in a week or so ago and I did think it was unfair on her as we werent able to warn her when she looked around.

I'm so annoyed. I've been thinking that I am sick of never being able to watch the communal tv or having to worry about the phone bill (our 16 yr old ran up a £150 bill - £105 of it her's which she doesnt seem too bothered to pay off) We now have a barr on it to stop her using it. The next bill has come in and still has phone numbers she has already admitted too - the LL seems to thinks it can only be me but she is saying the barr wasnt on on those dates. I'm not sure myself - I think she may have found a way of getting around it.

Honestly I could scream

Jen

Phew... I'd be looking for another place!
I took lodgings when I was 18 - not very expensive, only my own room to clean, and my own TV was part of the deal :)
    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j

    thanks!!

The thing is ... the LL can be brillant ...

The cleaner came yesterday and must have knocked a cable connecting my tv to the aeiral... and so I texted him at 7.30 to ask how I might go about doing something about it and he has just rung and talked me through which cable it might be thats come unconnected...

I'm terrible for not leaving/dropping jobs, places, people when they become unhealthly or I seem to always be complaining about them.

    Hi
Sorry cant give much advice in anything apart from this.
I assume the call bar was a id number that is input before the tel. number. All you needd to do is press redial and it comes up with last number and id. number

Cant you have a word with the other house mates about the one who's pregnant and not doing anything and then get her kicked out why should you clean up her mess!!

As for a cleaner sack that off straight away if people dont clean up after themselves neither do you just leave the place a tip they will soon come round to the idea that you aint doing it anymore and they will have to start pulling their weight!

    hiya,

I'm afraid they actually get on quite well .... she has a way of getting to people and literally everyone (the LL etc) seems to feel sorry for her and not want to put more strain on her etc.

I did ... and the student it seems was quite happy to live in a pig shed as long as was wired for Sky TV so she can keep up with Jerry Springer (seriously...), Holyoaks etc... The guy just continued as normal and absolutely refused to agree to a rota, he's a lot better paid than me (an engineer - loads of IQ, FA common sense) so I guess paying someone minimum wage to do a job he doesnt want to do doesnt affect him.

oh god this takes me back to being 17 and being in a shared house of gorillas

no one felt they should clean, etc... I got so fed up of coming home from work to have to clean up just so i could cook myself a meal and find my food gone, and someone had left their clothes in the washing machine (if i removed it i got shouted at)

in the end i made sure that all my plates cutlery etc and food was in my room, and kept my room clean, i never used the communal area at all.

Then when all the plates were dirty etc and the place was filthy everyone complained that i didn't pull my weight, i told them that i cleaned any mess i made, and anything that was dirty was their own doing.

    rota's didn't work.

in the end i had my own phone line in my room which they hated as theirs had a bar on it as they couldn't be arsed to pay the bill and wanted to use mine, and accused me of being selfish.

never ever again will i ever share
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

Have you tired trying to find another place to live? Go to an agency and try and find somewhere different. Tell the landlord that they can either sort the problem out.. or you're leaving... make them think

He seems to believe that i'm the problem ... I'm the only one who ever pushes him to do things around the house and Im the only one unhappy with the cleanliness of the place. He doesnt seem to connect with this - I am a decent tenant, who wants a nice place to live and is willing to go to some trouble in order to get it. He likes the non-complainers better it seems, all the while saying how he wants to refurbish the house to a high standard (its a bit rundown at the moment).
