Question for those that know where to get the 'more obscure' ingredients....
I've put a bacon joint (Mr T value) into my slow cooker, and I saw a vague recipe on another site that says to add dried split peas to the juice once you've removed the joint, cook, whizz, and serve as pea & ham soup (one of hubby's all time favourites). BUT it said the peas have to be the 'no soak' variety, and all I could find in Mr T (and on their website) were mushy or marrowfat that need soaking, or dried split peas that were yellow...... don't think hubby would entertain yellow pea & ham soup somehow
So, because I'm not going to have chance to get anywhere else until at least the weekend, I bought some marrowfats I'm going to have to soak first..... but can anyone please enlighten me as where to I may get green no-soakers for future reference?
It's going to be hit and miss anyway, 'cos I've no idea what quantity of peas to add to what quantity of 'stock'Cheryl0 -
Mr A's sells split green peas in the organics range
I would think what the recipe meant was to use the marrowfats but not soak with the block of bicarb though (thats what i would do anyway )
I would do about 300g peas to 1.5litres stock plus veggies on one brand there is a recipe on the pack

By the way, you don't mention water in your soup ingredients, but you'll need to add a fair bit. I use one 500g bag of split peas, the stock from one bacon joint, plus a large onion (chopped), a bayleaf or two, lots of black pepper and however much water it takes to cook the peas to the right consistency (sorry - a bit vague - I just play it by ear - but it's probably about 2 litres). Warning: taste the bacon juices after you've cooked the bacon and before making the soup - if they are very salty, you might not want to use all the juices initially. It's harder to remove a salty flavour than it is to add extra stock at the end! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Thanks both.
Asda isn't possible until the weekend, and I don't have a Sainsbury within a 'do-able' distance
Didn't mention water 'cos I assumed the stock was basically waterBut I'm not the best person to judge whether it's salty or not, 'cos I salt nothing and hubby adds to things that are already naturally too salty for my taste
Guess the best thing is for me to 'taste test', and if it's too salty for me then I'll have to see what hubby thinks (I won't be eating the soup!)

who made all the pies!
Ok here's the lot, apart from another small one already devoured by AM...
Total cost of all you see here: £1.90, or 10.5p per generous serving :money::money::money::TMy self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
So we’re empty nesters.
Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
My mother always served up leftovers we never knew what the original meal was. - Tracey Ulman0 -

Well, it depends on how much water you put into the slow cooker with the bacon joint. If I cook it in the slow cooker, I only put in half a mugful of water (plus whatever juices come out of the vegetables in the pot with the bacon), so the liquid is very concentrated and strong and I have to water it down when it is used for anything else. On the other hand, I often pressure cook a bacon joint, with the meat up to its waist in water, and then the stock is, as you say, basically flavoured water which doesn't need further dilution. Ah, the joys and infinite variety of the kitchen!
