ahh delited post! To do shortened versio I didnt buy the forraged stuff from you did I welshwoofs? Spooky that you posted re the same as I was out buying it!! Are you in Wales?

Yes, another Welsh resident here I'm afraid :D North Wales coast however so it would have been another enterprising forager you got your samphire from. I have sold some to restaurants before now, but haven't attempted markets.

I love foraging and it's amazing who's into it. I was on a train down to London for business a few months ago and struck up conversation with an old gent in the next seat who turned out to be a judge with a real love of foraging. He got a real gleam in his eye when talking about the satisfaction of finding and cooking wild foods.

Mine is one of those 'passed down' knowledge banks - as a kid my Grandmother (a great 'war cook') used to point out what could be eaten from the hedgerows. She also kept rabbits in the garden for food and always screeched her old Morris Traveller to a halt at the merest whiff of roadkill.

I keep thinking about keeping bunnies in the garden for food but Mr Welshwoofs is a little squeamish about that idea at the moment.

ISOM - Re breadmakers - I agree. I bought mine last year and used it quite a bit, and loved it at the time, because i thought breadmaking by hand was just too long winded and difficult.

I've since tried a lot of recipes on here and much prefer doing it by hand, i think the loaves are a better shape and you get more slices out of them (without the big hole in the bottom)

I'm a convert to the "by hand" method now and the breadmaker is currently taking up space in my cupboard waiting to be taken to my sisters...

I understnad that some people prefer the breadmaker though...

Treated myself to fresh peas in the pod from the farmers' market yesterday - first that I've seen this year - and remembered a good way of getting a bit more out of them which is pea pod soup. This works best when the pods are green and slightly fleshy, not so good when they are older.

Reject the strings when you are popping the pods to get the peas out, and give the pods a quick rinse. Put them in a pan with a chopped onion and just cover with water or chicken stock. Throw in some bayleaves and a few sprigs of summer savoury (annual) or winter savoury (perennial) if you have them. If you are using unsalted stock or water add a little salt. Bring to the boil and simmer for 20 minutes. Allow to cool and then liquidise (or liquidise hot if you are braver then me!) having first removed the bayleaves and winter savoury sprigs (a few dropped off leaves of savoury will not matter). Strain through a sieve and do not push through too much because the bits that remain unsoftened are quite inedible. Check seasoning. Good hot or cold.
If you know that you are serving cold then you could try cooking with some mint instead of the other herbs and serving with some chopped fresh mint on top.

seeing this reminded me that I had a recipe from a pre-war W.I.book of my late ma-in-laws on the Isle of Wight

    'Economy pea-shell soup'
Boil pea-shells till tender, pound them with a mortar and rub through a hair sieve, pouring the liquor the pea-shells were boiled in through, at the same time, sufficient to make it the required thickness for soup; add pepper ,salt a little sugar, cream or milk,a little onion(previously fried in butter), and a bone or small quantity of meat (this latter should have been boiled with the pea-shells and pounded with them ).N.B.If cream is usedit should be stirred in just before serving, not boiled with the soup.
from an old receipe book from Yafford 1872
    Ningwood & Shalfleet W.I. I.o.W.
    It sounds positively disgusting
Its a facinating old book though and has some adverts for wool at four and sixpence for a pound and a half post free from a suppliers in Somerset.
Reading some of the medical 'cures' I think I would have preferred to be ill

a cough cure was equal parts of Olive oil, warm honey, and rum well shaken whilst still warm from the stove, I had visions of rather tipsy W.I.ladies in the 1930s saying to their husbands It's all right George, It's only my cough mixture !! as they staggered home from their meetings

Morning all. Vouchers can be used in Mr T's even if you havent used it, as cocals says although this means Mrs Weezl will have to step foot in Mr T's and may need a councelling session or two first! :D
Unsure on the oven temp for the cake but would guess at 180/200 but may be wiser to wait until the shaz meister returns for advice! Shaz - soap is set & I'll try a handmade pura one tonight if I have time!
Re the BM I guess what I was saying was maybe try making it by hand first & then see if you want a BM. I got one through lack of cooking confidence I now realise. As Weezl will verify I LOVE shopping (and we discovered that my lazy, browse, shop is not Weezl's idea of fun which I possibly should have know :) and wouldnt want to stop people generally but on this one pepys may regret it and it end up and expensive space taker!!
Ok off to w*** - why is it that the sun shines with avengence as soon as Monday comes eh! Have a good day all, lovely munch that you are!

Did a freezer inventory but won't list as it would go on forever!!!

Also did a whole lot of cooking, made weetabix brownie and fudgy cookies from the OS recipe thread, and then had HM pizza last night and made bread rolls for lunch tomorrow.

All v yummy except made rice pudding tonight and it was HORRIBLE, made it last week and it was so yummy...don't know what I did wrong? Shouldn't have thought I could tweak the recipe lol...:o think I might have to throw it out, tried to add some choc chips to make it edible, lol, but still couldn't eat it...

Oh well, day one of my challenge over anyway and didn't spend any money...

Also, got some free food from work, they were cleaning out the food cupboard because people leave and don't take their food, and it was going to be thrown out so I got a pack of biscuits, a jar of peanut butter, a can of soup and one of spagetti and 5 drink sachets. No one else wanted it! :p
