download them onto an iPod? Or do I have to purchase rather than 'rent' them?
And I have heard that you can have TV episodes on an iPod, can these be ones you already own on DVD? And if so, can you put a film there temporarily, say for a long journey and then take it off afterwards?
I'm not very techie so speak slowly please...

No, that'd be theft, you have to own the original if you also want to put it on your iPod.
If you own the DVD, then you can convert it to play on the iPod, no probably at all.0 -
Thanks, so what if you borrow a friends CD and put that on your iPod? That's also wrong as you don't actually own it yourself?
Can you put something on the iPod and then sell the origional CD?
And finally, will all my DVDs be suitable to put on an iPod? Or do they have to be iPod compatible or something? They are just standard DVDs from supermarkets, amazon etc. Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.

Not legally. Can you put something on the iPod and then sell the origional CD?There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.
It's for the many and not the few. Be sure it's out there looking for you.
In every town, in every state. In every house and every gate.

Technically, if you don't own the CD and you copy the songs onto your computer or iPod, you are stealing them. The same for if you used to own the CD and now don't - the only reason for having a digital copy and not having the CD is if you damaged the CD somehow. (I think)
However, a lot of people do it - like taping something from the radio or TV is technically illegal. You're supposed to watch/listen to it once, and erase or tape over the recording.
It's not allowed to discuss illegal activities on this forum, apart from distinguishing what is legal and what isn't - but you have common sense, use that
I don't believe and I never did that two wrongs make a right0 -

You usually have to convert them (from DVD to MPEG-4), there are many freebie and commercial packages which do this, including various commercial Roxio products (Popcorn etc), or the excellent free Handbrake for PC, Mac or Linux.0 -
Umm, I wouldn't say we are discussing illegal activities, it's just that I had asked a few friends and nobody knew for sure what was and wasn't allowed and I wanted to do it properly.
So will all my DVDs be compatible? Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.

I thought it was technically illegal to copy a CD that you do own to an iPod or similar - it used to be anyway. Has this changed?Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -

It is still illiegal although there are proposals to has the law amended to allow this since everyone does it, the copyright holder see no issue (cough cough) based on their unwillingness to take a case to court as a test0 -
Yes it is technically illegal but everyone does it and it is generally accepted as ok to do it. Its just the greedy RIAA et al who would have you believe otherwise.I thought it was technically illegal to copy a CD that you do own to an iPod or similar - it used to be anyway. Has this changed?0
