……..And i saw on the oneshow tonight how easy it was to change a tyre! so i could do it myself if needs be! We have all the tools in the garage!..........

I do almost all the jobs on my cars myself but changing a tyre is one I’d stay well away from, particularly if I couldn’t get the valve caps off (which is the first really really easy step in changing a tyre)

Excuse me, but i do take this with some offence! Firstly, I am able to take valve caps off tyres, it's just in this particular situation there is a problem.
Secondly, as you say you do all the jobs on your car yourself, not all of us have experience with cars, therefore i came on here to ask for help, not to be looked down upon!

Wow, absolutely no offence meant, honest.

Just pointing out that changing tyres is maybe not as easy as it appears on a TV prog.

I am aware of this. Any person with common sense would do more research in to it before trying it, and thats exactly what i intend to do. No need to point out the obvious, thank you.

I didn't see the show but are you sure they showed you how to change a tyre or change a wheel with a tyre already on it? (which is the point vaio was making I believe?).

All very true and again no offence meant when I mention that anyone with common sense (and a tiny amount of mechanical ability) would not have….
    • forced them on in the first place,
    • Used Vaseline to try and release them
    • Been unable to get them off using basic tools
    • Even consider changing a tyre without professional equipment
  • Have you actually read the rest of the thread? and what anewman has said?

i didnt force them on, OH fitted them and they went on fine
vaseline is a trick my dad always used and it worked on our old rover
ask anewman on the basic tool bit
i didnt say i was going to chuffing well do it without professional equipment or professional help, i said i was going to look in to it and i said we have some tools in the garage.

Anyway, im not going to continue this with you, i only came on for help with my little corsa and obviously you are not helping.

If you are talking about changing a wheel that is an entirely different matter and altogether easier (and you don’t even need to remove the valve caps.)

However whilst relatively easy if you have never done it before it’s worth spending half an hour practising in daylight before you have to do it in the dark.

    Find somewhere level.
Handbrake on, car in gear and engine off.
Loosen wheel nuts of wheel in question.
Carefully jack car up following manufacturers instructions until wheel is just clear of the ground.
    Remove wheel nuts & wheel.
Fit new wheel and tighten nuts hand tight.
Carefully lower car and once back on the ground tighten wheel nuts fully.

yep and cut & pasted as below
I didn’t force them on, OH fitted them and they went on fine

What you actually said was…… “I think they just didn’t fit, and my OH has just forced them on.”
….Vaseline is a trick my dad always used and it worked on our old rover…….

I’ve never heard of Vaseline being used to release seized parts or any other car use apart from a coating on battery terminals to keep the acid away
I didn’t say I was going to chuffing well do it without professional equipment or professional help, I said I was going to look in to it and I said we have some tools in the garage.

Fine by me, I thought I was helping
