3,200 ciggys and 3kg of tobacco and 13 cases of fosters, they let me have the beer (nice of them) probably so i could drown my sorrows.i do this trip every 6 months.as we save hard to save cash .we save roughly £750 every 6 months on purchases doing it this way.in this country it would cost in the region of £1315.this is within their guidelines.

Correct, HM Customs guidelines suggest 3200 cigs and 3kg tobacco is reasonable for personal consumption, so it seems you are exactly on the limit. Maybe that's why they were suspicious?

Agree with nickmack that it's a guideline rather than a limit.

I would guess, though know nothing about it, that it is now up to you to prove it was for personal use. Or forget it.

Out of interest do you have a computer chip in your passport? I wonder if they have been tracking you and consider your trips suspicious?

You will have been clocked in and out of the country doing this. That is why you were stopped. You were very lucky not to have had the vehicle confiscated as well.

I must admit I assumed they had taken a vehicle the details of which would have been logged on leaving the country and flagged up a pattern.

Good point Bossyboots - that may well be the case.

OP - I presume you have been using the same vehicle on each trip?

Thats quite true; Customs do carry out surveillance on regular booze cruisers. That way, if they prosecute you, they have evidence for the prosecution.

It may be worth writing a letter to them at the relevant airport? I once helped a friend write to customs as she had had goods confiscated (difference circumstances to yours however) this resulted in her getting her fags back. Be quick though, as they destroy seized goods.

What do you mean by a trip? An organised trip by a tour company, or a mini bus/ car that goes over on an informal basis?
    Gone ... or have I?
