What I don't get, is this:
We all know that Toyotas have a well deserved reputation for reliability. We all also know that French cars, generally, do not.

So, the burning question. Is this car (in all it's flavors) actually made by Toyota or Citroen/Peugeot?

The petrol engine in them is Japanese and award winning - the rest of the partnership is a purely a guess but is thought to be Toyota for technology and manufacturing methods, and the french boys for the sourcing of components in Europe.

I certainly would have bought one if the engine was french, by the way on the diesel version the engine is french

Ok. So I went to look at cars today in the Tunbridge Wells car ghetto. I test drove the Peugeot version of the car and it was slow on the open road but fine apart from that and the tiny boot.

I then went over to Nissan and had a look at a Micra. The 1.5 diesel seems like good value, it returns much the same mpg as the C1/107 (albeit running off more expensive diesel) but has a boot that I could fit enough luggage in to go on holiday which will save me hiring a car when I go away.

Are there any good reasons not to get the Nissan? Is it rubbish in some way? I haven't driven it yet so I'm not certain that it's the car for me but it looked very promising.

The 1.2 petrol offers lower cost of ownership.
The 1.4 petrol is only around £500 on total cost of ownership over the first three years, which could swing the other way if diesel rises further in relation to petrol. In the end the cost of running the diesel is pretty much the same as the 1.4 petrol.
I'd say diesel if you do mostly open road / motorway other wise go for the petrol.
The diesel engine is from Renault and it's a good one.
    The car?
I couldn't because of the looks otherwise fine, but buy it as a nearly new / 1 year old. If you must have new Mazda 2 and Skoda Fabia hold value better so will cost you less in the long run.
