More Aldis on the way

Options
I saw this in today's paper - Aldi plans to open a new store in Britain every week till 2013 to cash in on the credit crunch. Apparently, shoppers are deserting Tesco, Sainsburys, Asda and Morrisons in the hunt for lower food prices.

It said too that Aldi keeps costs low by stocking about 2000 products compared to around 30,000 products the other supermarkets stock. I've never been to an Aldi before......is it a lot cheaper than the other supermarkets?

i dont really class aldi as being somewhere to be able to do a weekly shop, i guess if youre looking for bargains such as on the bakery side of things then theyd be okay, i think lidl are alot better than them, but i do prefer sticking to tesco and asda for my shopping and this is more due to the fact that you can get everything at these stores

Hmm:think:, does this mean that there'll be more reduced to clears in the main supermarkets then?
Anyway, to answer your question, Aldi is certainly worth having a look at. It depends mon what you buy in your regular supermarket, but I find it very handy for storecupboard essentials, and hubby loves their columbian coffee.

I love Lidls, sadly it is quite a drive away from me, and there is an Aldi equally distant which I have never visited. I look on going there with the same excitement as a child promised a day in a theme park!:o

At Lidls I buy all my washing clothes supplies, black bags, bleach, pasta, foil, and lots of staples. I also buy their frozen veg which is in my opinion, as good as anything you get in Waitrose. I don't buy their nicer items, like chocolate, biscuits etc as I am watching my weight, but I have never been disappointed in the quality of stuff I do buy.

I can't wait to try the much lauded Aldi face creams. It can't come to my area quick enough.

Emmy - I'm the same, I tend to do most of my weekly shop at Tesco too. I know Aldi are planning on having a store in my town so I'll check it out in a few months time...hopefully!

trying - I hope it means more reduced items too!

    I agree with emmy05.

I wouldn't be able to do my weekly food shop in Aldi's/Lidl's but I do get bits and pieces from there. I buy their salami, proscuitto, feta cheese, parmesean cheese, bacon, milk, alcohol, some fruit, veg, sugar, etc - all at a lower price than Tesco. I've only been dissapointed in quality once when I bought some plums and OH said they weren't very nice but, other than that - the products have always been fantastic.

In terms of 'is it a lot cheaper' - on the bits I buy, yes it is definitely cheaper - especially on the cheeses and cold meats. Same taste and much better value for money!

I find that when I'm being very OS and super-organized (ie in the school holidays.. I'm a teacher but don't get paid in the holidays :() I can get everything I need from Aldi. That's because I've the time to make absolutely everything from scratch and we're so short of cash that I'm really motivated to be 'good'. As far as I can see they have all the basic supplies you need to make good, tasty, cheap home cooking - plus piles of yummy German biscuits.....
