    My dell cant be rested on my lap for more than half hour or it ends up bright red it gets that hot.

    My XPS system is fine also. Slight increase in temperature over the hard disk. The cleaning solution above sounds like it will be worth a try.

    I fixed a friends computer that was getting hot and kept crashing. She keeps dogs and it turned out to be a a really compact furball about an inch thick blocking the airflow of the fan.

    As other poster said this is at your own risk.
