National tyres oil change

Options
After seeing the oil and filter change offer on this forum at National Tyres, I booked in my car in online. I chose to have Castrol 5W30 oil as this is what my car manufacturer states. I got a confirmation email and paid. On Friday I rang to ask what time I should go, the manager said there was a problem as the offer only covered upto 5 litres of oil and mine takes 6.5 litres. I said I had paid already and didn't want to pay anymore and he said he would sort something out.

Yesterday I went for the job to be done, he said it was sorted and I would get 5W30. When the job was finished, they printed me a receipt which says they have used 10W40 but the manager insists they have used 5W30 but had to state the other oil to get around the problem. Both oils are the exactly the same price on the website so I don’t see why 10W40 had to be printed on the receipt.

Although the manager and the technician who did the job were both very helpful and did a good job, I am very concerned I have the wrong oil now and am thinking of draining it out and doing the job myself. Also if I sell the car I can’t show this receipt as it shows the wrong oil has been used. I bought and paid for Castrol 5W30 and this is printed on the confirmation email but the receipt shows that 10w40 has been used. What do you lot think?

I wouldn't worry. At my National Tyres, they put down a wheel tracking as four wheel balances to knock the price down. The problem is that the computer sets the pricing and unlike other companies, it appears to be a very inflexible system so sometimes they have to be a bit creative with the job type entry to get what they've done for the price. They have to account for 6.5l of oil but have to charge the lower price they quoted you so it sounds like they've done exactly that.

Thats what you get with people like National Tyres etc etc always on the make.....
To all intents and purposes your vehicle has the wrong oil in it......where will you be if something drastic goes wrong and you try to make a claim ?????
'The manager and the technician were very helpful and did a good job'.......and have left you thinking you have the wrong oil in your vehicle!!!!!!!!!!!!! what !!!!!.....I don't think of that as 'helpful and done a good job' at all.
Personally for peace of mind I would change the oil.....
And not go back to National Tyres again....

How do you know its got the wrong oil in it? 10W40 isn't going to do any harm.

Is 5W30 oil not for colder climates eg Sweden?

10W40 is what is reccomended for temperate climes like the UK?
  • The handbook states 5W30, its the Ford Duratec V6 engine. I know putting 10W40 in Ford Zetec engines can cause running problems because of the hydraullic tappets but I'm not sure how vital that is the the Duratec?

Depends on what the OP drives. 5W30 is what Ford recommend for a number of their cars.

If you look here there was a long debate about it, with the conclusions that the 5W30 oil helped fuel economy and performance, and putting in 10W40 might have an effect on wear of certain components.

Their T&C states "Max 6.litres", not 5. They make virtually nothing on an oil change anyway-go and buy 6.5 litres of oil, and a filter, then add labour at least 1/2 hour.and see how much that comes to, and you cant dispose of your own old oil legally anyway.

my focus is recomended to use 5w 30,but also in the handbook it states 2 alternative viscosities of oil which can be used as an alternative if 5w 30 isnt available, but it shows you the benifits of all 3 oils, max temp, minimum temp, longevity etc..
so you may find you need to change the 10w 40 earlier than you would with the 5w 30.
