hi my p.c kept doing that cannot reach server thing so i phoned my ISP. uwclub.net and the guy told me to get a pen and at the back of my wired router there was a hole. put the point of the pen in the reset hole hold for 10 secs and type in a new code witch he told me , it worked and hasnt happened since. Oh dear i wish i hadent said that ,sort of tempting fate arent i .So try your ISP again good luck , bye DAZZZZ.confused-smiley-013.gif:think:

No no no, don't do this. You will force a factory reset of the router! As it's working on the laptop, this is not going to help you.

    okay didn't reset the hub.

i noticed that in system there were 4 things with yellow ? and it said the drivers weren't installed. i reinstalled xp and the ? didn't change. meanwhile i found some more discs one of them the usb dongle installation disc:j . i've installed this and it connected using the dongle! so i'm now re installing the bt total broadband software and will then do a windows update and try and find the missing drivers. hopefully i will be able to fix it and get back online using just the wired connection and worst case i'll have to nick the boys usb dongle until i get my own.

i'll let you know how i get on.

    thanks for all the suggestions

after someone has re-installed windows they have forgotten to install the drivers for the on-board ethernet card in.
Install these and it should work fine, they will be on a cd you got with the system
or if u can track down what mainboard it is, look on the manuf website with the lappy, copy to flash disk etc and transfer to the pc
