pc crashed now won't conect to internet - help!

currently online using hubby's laptop. my computer crashed yesterday - error with system 32, so i reinstalled the windows xp service pack 2 and now it won't connect to my bt home hub. the hub is working as the laptop and xbox and wii can all connect using it.

i've reinstalled the bt total broadband software and it just says cannot conect to server. i spent and hour on the phone to bt's help desk before the phone ran out of battery and no further forward.

can anyone help me get my computer back on line please?

cheers

Have you tried connecting it via ethernet or USB cable?

check in the bios to make sure you still have the network connections enabled. One of our old computers regularly resets things in the bios if it crashes.

maybe no need, goto controlpanel/system/device manager if the network adapter is listed in there it is enabled in the bios, if not then pressing a key(most common ones are "del" or "F2") on boot before windows loads will get you into bios.
From there its usually integrated peripherals and a submenu where its located.

The 1394 adaptor is the firewire adaptor IIRC.

There should be a wireless network icon?

Is the wireless network card a USB dongle? If so, have you tried reloading the driver for it?

    what does iirc mean?

the computer is quite old, got it end of 2003, but had/has a really good spec.
i don't think it has a wireless card - we've got a wireless usb dongle for the boys pc in another room. i've plugged it in to a usb port at the back and the computer isn't registering it.

we always connect it to the home hub using either an ethernet or usb cable and this hasn't changed.

IIRC = If I Remember Correctly.

Most USB dongles need to software installing first, before they get plugged in.

Unplug it, and check the Add programs list in Control Panel and see if the software is installed. If it is, uninstall it, then re install it. If not, just install it. Then plug the dongle back in.

It could just be the dongle is faulty, I've had one fail on me in the past!

hi my p.c kept doing that cannot reach server thing so i phoned my ISP. uwclub.net and the guy told me to get a pen and at the back of my wired router there was a hole. put the point of the pen in the reset hole hold for 10 secs and type in a new code witch he told me , it worked and hasnt happened since. Oh dear i wish i hadent said that ,sort of tempting fate arent i .So try your ISP again good luck , bye DAZZZZ.confused-smiley-013.gif:think:
