can you still make some money selling at car boots?

We do a couple (3 maximum) a year, as a way of de-cluttering the house. As has been said before, we only carboot what isn't going to sell easily on E-bay.
Round here the people who do best seem to be people selling their own unwanted stuff, rather than those with 'bought-in' items, probably because price is such an issue.
If somebody will give me £1 for something I don't want or need, great! it's 'profit'- I don't have to work out how much the cost-per-item is etc etc like the 'commercial' sellers.I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.0 -
I sell large items or things that are too heavy for postage. I add all the smaller things too so usually make about £80 once a year. Unfortunately around here people want something for nothing so sales can be hit or miss, also we are swamped with CBs so buyers market. However a great laugh and a good mornings work!0

we made £150 easily the last time we did it. It was all clutter that we didn't want, and got between 50p-£20 for. DVD/CDS seemed to go well and odds and ends like magnets/children's toys. The things i thought would sell well like all my chick lit novels etc seemed hard to sell, despite being in vgood condition!Mortgage free 04/03/2025. Thanks to this site and lots of overpayments bit by bit.
Next stop: house repairs, holiday fund, replace our very old cars, more financial security/early retirement savings.🤞0 -

Hi spendcurber
3 carboots that i can recommend on the hertfordshire boarders of north London are.
Aldenham county park every sat during summer.
Start time is 7am but public really dont come until 8am as its free admission then. About 40-90 sellers, depending on weather.
As a seller this is good for selling toys and junk they seem to love it there.
Mutton lane Potters Bar is every other saturday (weather permitting).
Set up is about 11am doors open 12 but i think cost £2 to get in at that time, Most people come a 1pm 20p admission then i think.
I cant say what would sell well here as i have only ever gone as a punter but the stalls are varied and always between 40 upwards of cars are pitched up.
the last one is my favorite.
Swanley bar just up the road from potters bar bus station (just carry straight on up coming from cockfosters)
Pitching up is round 11am.
This is my fav because i seem to always sell expensive items here especially power tools.
There seems to be a large polish community that come to this and they love power tools.
Also good vinyl records sell here (ones people of heard of or are collectable).
Beware though they do swarm as you are unpacking and you must be firm with them.
About 50-70 cars pitch here.
This carboot is great if you have new stuff to sell as well as old.
Hope thats of some use and happy carbooting.0 -
Can anyone recommend one in Wigan/ Lancs/ Greater Manchester area? I have been to a few in the past that havent been great, does anyone know of one that will be busy?
Thanks in advance! xxxDealing with debt by selling property: Mortgage- £55k, Loan on top of mortgage (northern rock goddamnit!) £10,800, Alliance and Leicester loan- £1,800, Cahoot loan- £1,300, Aim to be house-less and debt free by December 2008! Wish me luck!0 -
I do both buying (being a massive record collector) and selling at car boot sales. Originally I was buying factory seconds and catalogue returns in order to sell them on ebay, however that got flooded and it was hardly worth it. So due to moving I thought I have to get rid of the stuff I'd not been able to shift so resigned myself to selling it at car boot sales. To my suprise I made a lot more at car boots sale with respect to hours spent at the car boot sale vs ebay.
If you plan to buy in to sell I'd suggest going around a few car boot sales and see what's on offer, what sells and the type of people that attend. Then become a regular at a couple of the better ones (by which I mean, the ones that best suit what you're selling.).SpendCurber wrote: »Can anyone recommend a good car boot in London? Lewisham (although South London) is a great one as it's held in a multi storey car park so weather is never an issue.
As for Surrey there is one in Epsom, held most sundays.0 -

Carboot Junction.com have a list of the ones in your area.
There is a Sunday one in the multi storey carpark next to Tesco in St. Helens. Starts 7am and busy. Councils website may also be useful.0 -
Oddly enough I was planning one today...well thinking today I need to do one. Does anyone know, by any chance, any one in Liverpool which can hire you a table as I do not have a car!!0

I did a carboot a few weeks ago with a friend of mine and we made 100! we were only expecting to make about 50 so we did do well! We just sold odd bits and bobs, videos dont tend to sell that well anymore which is what I had so much of! Disney videos etc.. The only problem with the carboot that is local to me is that they let the buyers in before they let the sellers in..i dont know whether this is done puposely but it was awful! we had about 20 people come to our car picking things up before they had even been put out and ended up selling things for stupid prices are we were overwhelmed with all these people! Dont know if that is a problem for anyone else! but all in all went well!0
