Sounds like you can get into the bios to change the boot sequence.
Sounds like it could be any of duff PSU, CPU, mobo or memory. If it wont boot from floppy or CD then it's unlikely to be hard disk. Have you tried clearing CMOS on your mobo?

Straight after the "eMachines" screen - virtually straight away.
I can get into BIOS yes and I haven't claread CMOS (don't know how)

No - usually find it's only one component that's died, which can easily be replaced. Rarely have to deliver the last rites to a whole PC.
Can u go into the bios and look at the System Monitor page and tell me what your CPU Temp is.
Also note down and post all the voltage readings you see in there.

When it hangs, what's it doing? Does it shut itself down? Does it just freeze? If the latter, what's it showing on the screen when it freezes?
How many memory (RAM sticks) do you have fitted in the mobo?

Been in the bios, there's no system monitor page and no Temp listings and no voltage listing.0 -

It just hangs with a tiny white line blinking in the top left corner of the screen.
I have 2 sticks of Ram - 256Mb0 -
Take both memory sticks out. Refit just one of them and try boot. If that doesn't work, switch off take that memory stick out and fit the other in it's place. Try to boot again. Post what you get.
