    Puppy. When windows dies, your internet is hacked, you can't connect due to drivers etc, or HDD failure then Puppy and a usb stick alway (so far) seem to work.
    GOOGLE it before you ask, you'll often save yourself a lot of time. ;)

    try https://www.opera.com browser- it can make pages fit to screen width. Hope you have 512Mb RAM.

    I use Mandriva & it works great. I tried others which didn't work fully.

    try teen puppy(a puppy linux version) if you want to play dvds ,music etcetera.
    Ubuntu is nice for ease of use, adding KDE makes it a bit more like windows and easier I think. I needed gutsy gibbon to make my LCD monitor work as the previous version couldnt recognise it.
    Its a good idea to check for linux drivers for such thing as wireless and video on the manufactureres websites.
    The right video drivers can solve resolution problems.

    Tend to use Windows XP for day to day tasks

    was gentoo but my new laptop bios has serious power management compatibility issues so now stuck on xp till solved grr
