Ubuntu "Hardy"0
-
My Vista recently packed in, blue screen of death and now will not boot using any means. It was running on a fairly new laptop which was not supplied with any disks as you are supposed to create your own. Needless to say, I put it off, thinking that I could do it later as there was no way my new machine would go belly-up.
Anyway I've been trying out some Linux live CDs to see if any would be a suitable replacement before committing any of them to HDD.
Only tried 3 so far. Not too keen on Ubuntu. Knoppix seems OK and I've managed to make a bootable USB stick using it and is much quicker than the CD. My preferred distro so far though is PCLinuxOS. It just seems more user friendly although it does seem to make all web pages too wide for the screen and despite playing with the display settings I can't get it sorted.
I am still undecided about making the switch to Linux as some of the setting up seems quite complicated and don't yet know enough about the software available and its interoperability with other OS.
Thats my story so far raptorman. If you or anyone else has any thoughts on the matter they would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers!

i use ubuntu on my media server.
tried eAR OS and REALLY liked it but it didn't work with my sound card - but then neither does ubuntu hardy, on which it is based. so i'm using ubuntu 7.10.
only started using linux a few months ago and am totally loving it.
i have hardy on my main pc as a dual boot but it does not work with my usb wireless adapter so once i get a new pci wireless card i will start using linux as my main OS.
its like starting all over again but i have managed to fumble my way through setting up a new pc from scratch using ubuntu and getting all drivers etc to work. it is a lot more slick than i thought it was going to be.The difference between genius and stupidity is that genius has its limits0 -

Whenever I have any problems I always use
the forums relating to the version I am using.
I am no PC/Linux expert but I must admit
it's great fun learning. I have been using
several different 'distro's' over the last

Seems to have a lot of opinions on this topic and may be worth a read. I'm going to work my way through it and see what I can see.0 -

Usually dual boot XP and PCLOS, but cannot get printer to work with PCLOS.
New bigger HD so may even triple boot by adding Ubuntu, well I find it better than the T.V.
Also the other week while waiting for new HD tried Puppy Linux on 350mhz P2, 128mbRAM and 620mb HD. Works fine for just surfing.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
