Quesyion on booking a flight to Australia for November 2008 - Prices have gone crazy!

Dear moneysavingexperts - some help and guidance please.........

I have had a really rough start to the year and now fully recovered, after a major operation back in February, its time to relax and go and visit my family in Perth, Australia.

The price of flights to Oz has gone crazy with the cheapest flight I can find being £950 return.

I do realise the fuel price surcharge has not helped but are there any cunning ideas, companies, airlines, screensavers, booking last minute even that anyone knows who have any ways of shaving a few more pounds off.....I have tried all the major airlines and no luck but wondered as a last resort if anyone had any other ideas.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Unfortunately our exchange rates with Australia and some of the Far East have been severely hit by the credit crunch so prices have gone up.

Have a look at round the world tickets, they do them at plenty of travel agents. You may end up paying a bit more than what you would to fly to Perth alone but you get to go somewhere else too.

Have you tried Dial a FLight? There number is on their website - www.dialaflight.com.

They cut the cost of a flight i booked recently by £200.

If you go to www.saynoto0870.com and put their number into that then a cheaper number will come up - a landline number.

Regretably the days of cheap flights anywhere is numbered. With fuel at $145 a barrel, fares will only go one way and choose an airline with a decent reputation, it is a long flight. Some airlines are in serious financial difficulties, if any agent offers an airline you have never heard of, this is not the year to take a risk. Frankly at the moment I would be tempted to call your local travel agent and ask them to check fares, but don't expect a really low fare, they aren't there anymore

I think this says it all - Qantas Special Sale Fares, valid for when you travel:

    http://www.qantas.com.au/deals/do/dyn/specials/displayGlobalDeals

    Bali, from £1009!!

I know that Qantas are never the cheapest, but a year or two ago, their equivilant sale fares a couple of years ago would be at least 1/3 cheaper - around £600, so this reflects the massive upward price trend of all airlines.

I think people are going to have to seriously start re-thinking their travel plans!

But that still takes you a very long way for your money.

I hope the growth of Emirates, they have ordered a lot of new aircraft, generates more choice and price competition for travellers going east.
