Sometimes, just sometimes, it's cheaper to fly west to Australia instead of the usual route east.
You could spend a few moments checking out cheap flights to L.A. then onward flights direct with U.S. carriers and others like Air New Zealand. I've even known someone fly to Jo'burg then on to N.Z. and over to Sydney and save themselves over £500 on the return fare via the usual route.
It's worth a try, especially if you can find an airline with a sale on at the moment.

Have you tried booking two separate flights, i.e one from UK to HK and then HK to SYD? Or something similar.
