This is one of the hardest things Ive had to deal with as a parent TBH.
As you say at their age they just dont get it.
But at the end of the day it can only come from them.
Its not the standard grades/GCSE,s that are the big problem its the highers/a levels.
    No easy answers AFAIK.
If tthere is tell me quick!!

Sorry to hear that your son is causing so much angst.

As you say he isn't academic but does come across as a decent worker so will probably always earn.Perhaps when he's older he'll want to study and get some qualifications.
I'm afraid if there's no motivating him then you'll need to accept that(as hard as it is) and just see his other qualities.

I know it's hard as had the same results with a couple of my boys but they have done ok for themselves and are happy.

I don't have boys but how about approaching it from the "where do you see yourself in x years" route? Perhaps getting him to think about what he wants to do after school might motivate him. Especially if whatever it is needs certain qualifications. And if he doesn't want to do A levels then this will be his last year at school so he needs to think about what next, college, apprenticeship etc. That might seem a bit more like real life approaching............. Just a thought.

unfortunately some children are academic and some not but coming at it from what he wants to be in so many years time is a good idea.

I wouldn't stress about your sons exams Lucielle, you have already done everything you can as a mother to support him, now its up to him. I have already been through this with my children, who seem to take after me, not really being able to focus on exams in my teenage years!......It wasn't until they got their results and didn't do aswell as their friends that it started to hit home.

Exams and be retaken or he can go onto college and study something that is more vocational and of interest to him....maybe at an agricultural college as he likes beating?

For me a few years doing low paid shop work brought it home to me that if I wanted more I would have to work harder and get some exams. I went back to college when my daughter was 2 and then onto university...have got a degree and post grad dip and then retrained again as a book keeper..all while my kids were at school. DD's dad is still hopeful she will go back to college as she has the brains, just not the motivation yet.

I don't know it that helps at all......

He does want to go to agricultural college but to get on the slightly higher course he needs 5 GCSEs preferably with maths and english in there. His head of year has had a chat so we'll see what happens.

Thank goodness its Friday, the week has crawled by. Yesterday was a good day after all. Went out with another friend who has found out she has got a new house to move into and is a bit unsure. Decided we'd go out and play. She gave me £20 petrol money and bought lunch which was lovely of her.

Delivered another load of logs today and 2 orders in for next week. Paid £112 off the debt. Tomorrow I'm taking DD1 for a wash, cut and blowdry. Also need to send off DS2s passport application, which I think I'll do using the postoffice. Then I might pop into Lidl. DS1 did say he was cycling to the farm to go beating but looking at the weather think he might want a lift!

Didn't sleep well last night, brain decided it wasn't going to switch off.

  • I know money is tight but have you thought about a private tutor for DS?
