    On the desktop PC.....
    Open Internet Explorer
    Click Tools > Options
    Click the Connections Tab
Check what you have in that window - do you have 'Never dial a connection' radio button selected? Do you have anything under the 'Dial up and VPN settings' ?

Yes i have the never dial a connection selected. Have now borrowed another laptop and got the router working via wired/ethernet so it is definately something on my computer that is either not enabled or not working. Its going to go out of the window soon!

If you go to start > settings > network connections

Do you have an entry for a network adapter / ethernet adapter / LAN connection ?
    If so, is it enabled?
If so, right click, properties, and select internet properties (TCP / IP), select properties, choose obtain IP automatically and obtain DNS automatically.

If you don't have a LAN connection / ethernet adapter listed in network connections, you might have to enable it in your computer's BIOS, see here:

    http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000192.htm

You would have to navigate the BIOS settings, look for onboard ethernet, and make sure it's set to enabled.

Try not to change any other BIOS settings!
