I have a normal pc desktop(bought 2nd hand) and have broadband thru a usb modem(plusnet). Daughter has new laptop and wants wireless access. A frind gave me her router which she no longer used but couldn't get it to work so bought new D-Link router. Tried to set it up, software telling me that couldn't set up internet account so contact ISP which I did, he said broadband was active, got daughter to log on and she was able to. They said to ring D-link which I did, after lengthy conversation was told that it was aproblem with my computer as router must be working ok for my daughter to be able to access internet and to contact the computer manufacturer. Does anyone know what could be wrong with my computer as its now friday evening and everything is shut. Sorry for length of post,I'm a bit of a non techie(to say the least!). Thanks for any guidance

sorry if this is a stupid question, but have you checked that wireless connection is enabled on your computer?

Not a stupid question, i'm the stupid one ! I have looked there, nothing about enabling wireless. The wireless part works as the laptop picks it up but can't get onto the internet on my desktop thru wired , sorry if i haven't explained very well.0

Hi, Brooksie
Have you (or somebody else) enabled wireless security?
Can the main pc reach a web page?
You are only using the D-link router and have discarded the usb modem?0 -
remove usb modem and any drivers for the modem and any associated software then rebootclick here to achieve nothing!0

Have you run the network setup wizard? In XP: Start/My Network Places/Set up a home or small business network. Choose the 'This computer connects to the internet through a residential gateway or another computer' option. There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.

You haven't actually said, but does your desktop have the necessary hardware for wireless? This commonly is an internal card or a usb stick.0

I was assuming from what was stated in post #3 that the main PC has a wired (ethernet) connection to the router. Can you confirm this brooksie? There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.

If the desktop does not have a wireless card, probably the easiest way to solve the problem is to get a USB wireless stick (about £20 ish) and connect to the router by wireless?I'm a retired employment solicitor.
