There is help available towards the health costs, including sight tests and vouchers towards the cost of glasses for people on a low income:

You don't have to be totally skint to get help, especially if you get Child or Working Tax Credits.0 -
I used Tesco for eye test, don't rate my experience very highly, wont go there again. Don't like the glasses I bought there either.
My advice would be to go to D&A or Spec Savers Vision Express etc. Get your eyes tested correctly then get your glasses elsewhere.
2 years ago I bought a pair from glassesdirect £15 + £2.50pp can't fault them, will def. use them again

Can't comment on Tesco BUT ASDA is GREAT.
They CORRECTLY test your eyes using EXACTLY the same equipment, procedures and skill as your list - at least ours does.
The only place that has ever done anything different was Optical Express and that was prior to having laser correction. There was a "balloon focus" test (best description I can come up with) and a laser scan procedure that "mapped out all the bumps".
The only place that got it totally wrong was BOOTS "The Opticians".
Did a test, got a prescription, had the glasses - HEADACHES !!!
Went to ASDA got another test - TOTALLY DIFFERENT precription.
They could not understand how Boots got it so wrong.
Took the glasses back and got a full refund, including the cost of the eye test.

They had free eye tests in my local Tescos (shoreham-by-sea) when i just did the shopping today. Dont know if this is just my store or across the board.
If they work the same way as asda do, it'll be when they've had cancellations or they aren't fully booked for the day, they offer that days vacancies for free...better than paying for the optician to sit around doing nothing (before any opticians jump on me...a few that no longer work at my local store did do nothing when there was no-one to see!)0 -

Completely out of the blue, I got a letter from my local Vision Express, who I have never used before, With a voucher for a free eye examination + £50 off eyewear. It's valid until the 11th September, but I do note in the small print it says "Enhanced eye examination charged at £10".
Perhaps the free one just confirms you've still got two eyeballs :rotfl: .
I'm tempted as I'm long overdue for a test. Probably give them a ring first to check there are no sneaky hidden catches.

Had my eyes tested earlier this year at Vision Express. The enhanced eye examination means they take digital photos of the inside of each eye (retina?) so that next time you go they can compare to see if there's any changes. They look at your retina anyway, it's just a way of watching for any changes that might indicate something treatable going on. I've always been happy with Vision Express, so I went for it seeing as I am likely to be going back to them for my next test.0 -
Both Tesco and Asda offer a free eye test and charge £15 for a contact lens check. Surely the level of expertise offered depends on the standard of the optician rather than where they work. Hence why shouldn't a supermarket optician offer as good a service as anywhere else?
I'm trying to find a inexpensive optician who can fit me for Sauflon New Day dailies but, sadly neither of these, in my area at least, offer this brand.0 -
a free eye test at boots when you join their free health club, lots of other perks aswell.
