Afternoon all, i'm currently in my first term of second year, and since day 1 of first year i had never really felt like university was for me, i don't like the course, nor can i think of a course id rather do and don't like the uni atmosphere. I just generally feel unhappy at uni and i don't want to continue through 3…

Maintenance loan query
My DD will (she hopes) be starting Uni in 2010 so the household income that will be used to determine her maintenance loan is 2018-19. Does she have to reapply every year or is the 5 years (long course) of loan calculated at the beginning and then used year on year? I can see that we could make massive pension…

Student loan additional drawdown on statement... 5 years after finishing uni??
I left uni in 2012 and have just received a statement that has £3k 'drawdown' this year which means that despite making payments each month my overall balance has actually gone up this year. I called the SLC who said that sometimes universities are a 'bit late' with charging their fees correctly. I asked for them to send…

Can only 1st years get a student bank account?
Hi, I went into Santander today, hoping to get a student account with a free 4 year railcard, and was told that I couldn't open an account as I was in my second year of study. They told me that the rules had changed, and now you can only open a student account in your first year of university unless you are switching from…

Query: Any benefit for sponsoring spouse's post graduation
Hey all! I have been following MSE forums for all my financial decisions and posting for the first time as i couldn't already find any thread related to my query. I am on a Tier 2 General visa in UK and would be sponsoring my spouse's(on Tier 2 Dependent) post graduation course. As she applied late for the course, we could…

Overpay mortgage or clear student loan?
My DD has a student loan pre 2012 with repayments of about £270 per month. She also has savings (thanks to generous grandparents) which could have cleared the loan but we thought it would be better to keep the loan and the savings for all the reasons Martin mentioned. She is now buying a flat and because she has a large…

Anyone on this thread interested in discussing current affairs?
There's a forum on the site called Discussion time. I recently carried out an age survey on there and there wasn't a single person in the 18-24 group. I think the forum might benefit from a wider range of opinions, especially in view of the degree of polarisation in views and priorities between the young and old these days.

PGCE Funding and additional help
Hi, so I am looking at doing a maths PGCE and wondering what funding I am entitled to as a single parent. I would be doing the PGCE full time and would have no income. However, I do know I would be entitled to a £25,000 bursary so I'm just wondering if any one knows exactly what of the following I would be entitled to in…

student finance for the mature student
So..I am new to the forum, but need a question answering. I am about to apply for student finance to study to be a nurse with the OU. At 48, and a 3 year course, this would take me to 51 before I would need to repay anything. What happens at retirement age as the loan is wiped after 30 years and hopefully, I am still not…

Student loans- old style- 4 loans from 1995-1998
Hi, I was at university starting in 1995 and graduating in 1999. I will be 50 next year and am unclear as to whether all 4 loans will be written off from Erudio's books or just the first 3- ie do all post 1998 loans have the same terms or is it dependent on when the course started?? So do all 4 get treated the same?? I've…

Student loan interest/repayment a scam?
Can't believe I only just noticed this. HMRC deduct money from my paycheck every month for student loans repayment, but then they sit on it until the end of the financial year before handing it over to the Student Loans Company as a lump sum. Meaning, throughout the year, SLC are applying interest each month based on a…

cut-off date/age for old style student loans?
Hope this is the right board. I went to uni from 1995-99, so got 4 loans out at the time, one for each year. This would have been the old consumer debt-style student loans. Anyway, what with ill health, low income and other circumstances I've deferred repayment every year since I graduated. My question is: I vaguely…

Should I pay for my final year rather than a loan?
Hi, So I started University in September 2014, I've done 3 years, one of these being a placement year, and have taken tuition fees for all 3, so totalling about £19,000, I have no other loans. I have the ability to pay for final year out of my own money, rather than adding to my loan. I would hope/expect to start on a Grad…

query re: masters grade -referred on a small part so mark set at a Pass
just wondered if this is usual. Just finished my Masters and got the overall grade which was a pass as I had a referral on a presentation so the overall grade can only be a pass. This seems a bit unfair. Anyone know if it is usual? If I had realised I wouldn't have wasted so much effort!
