Collective Investment Bond - Inheritance
Hi, hoping someone can help me with this as I haven't got a clue! I have received a letter from my lawyer regarding an inheritance following a death of a relative. There is a "Collective Investment Bond" which I was originally advised would be paid out to me at X value (value taken at date of death). The lawyer has since…

H2B ISA and cash ISA? Plus Stocks and shares ISA and mortgage question!
Hi all, I've been spending the day looking at ISA's and investment opportunities (a bit of an admin day!). I came across something on MSE that said that a help to buy ISA is a cash ISA and therefore you can only have one? Is this correct? I opened up a H2B ISA two years ago with Barclays, but also have a cash ISA which I…

Apologies..not sure if I’m doing this right as I’ve never joined the forum before but I am desperate for some advice. Myself and my husband are about to sell a property and will not be buying another straight away. We’re hoping to have around £350k which we want to put into the bank until we are ready to buy again. I’ve…

Children's isa no longer eligible for higher interest rate
I have set up a child's isa for my son, and my wife and I have been saving in that account since he was born in 2012. We have just received a letter from Halifax to say he was not eligible for the higher rate of interest since 2017. They have only just sent the letter within the last 3 months. Are we able to claim from…

Savings Account vs Mortgage Investment
On MSE it references that "The simple rule of thumb is: If you can get a higher rate on your savings than you pay on your mortgage, saving wins. But if your mortgage rate is more than your savings rate, then it makes sense to overpay." What are everyone's thoughts on investing money into overpaying on your mortgage? Now…

Help to Save - ineligibility due to a bank holiday
Hello. New to the forum here. I currently claim UC but will be made ineligible starting next month because my salary is too high (19k per year) Last month I was paid a partial salary so would have been eligible to open a help to save account. But unfortunately my first full wage falls in the same assessment period because…

Ifa charges
Hello, I've used an IFA, Flying Colours, for a couple of years, have no problems with the service. My question is the charges, I've paid 0.54% on the value of my pension pot. I've just been informed the charge will increase to 1%. Is this industry standard, it does seem a big increase approx 80%? Many thanks

Smaller companies fund - passive or active?
I will be using a smaller companies fund in my SIPP to complement my core holding of HSBC Global Strategy - Balanced. It will form around 10% of the portfolio. I quite like the look of HERALD INVESTMENT TRUST (HRI) . It is Global but UK biased (50% Uk) and focuses primarily on tech/comms companies. What I don’t like is the…

Help to Buy ISA to Lifetime ISA Transfer
My girlfriend started a help to buy ISA last year, and when I looked at it for her I let her know that it could only be used to purchase a property up to the value of £250k. While this is good for a first time buyer, we'll be looking to buy a place together, it won't be my first property, and we'll probably want to spend…

Hi My daughter is 12 and we have a child trust fund set up under the Labour government scheme. We moved to Germany as a family last August and plan to stay here for the foreseeable future. SIPP/ portfolio advice
Courtesy of a far-sighted and tax conscious father, I have some money in a SIPP (approx £135K). This is split between five Unit Trusts. I am a 35 year-old teacher and therefore fortunate to have access to the Teachers’ Pension Scheme. The SIPP is held via interactive investors. I am very minded to do what I have done for…

Baldrick's cunning plan
So having spent far too much time on this forum, Monevator and elsewhere, this is my cunning plan to grow a small amount of money, which I can afford to lose, into a university fund for my eldest. I appreciate that the consensus is that it's time in the market rather than timing the market, but I can't resist having a…

Withdraw savings or ISA?
Can I please ask advice on the best account to withdraw from (and clear out) when there’s a choice of two, both variable interest rates (1% almost - nothing in it), just that one is an ISA and one a standard savings account. I’m thinking probably best to leave the ISA intact but get a little muddled with all the changes.…
