Too cautious?
We're in our 60s and will have a very comfortable income once all our pensions come into payment over the next 5 years. At present it is just ok, but we manage. No mortgage or debts. I have been reviewing our savings and two thirds are in cash (cash Isas, Santander 123, Premium Bonds etc) and one third in S&S Isas (Mainly…

No risk £100k investment
An elderly friend of the family has asked me to take a look at her finances. She is a widow, in her 80s, in her own home with no mortgage and is a non tax payer. She is looking to move into sheltered accommodation and wanted to understand her finances better. She manages very well on her income, and indeed has some £10k in…

Questions on Help to Buy and Cash ISA's
Hello. I've seen the news about the new Help to Buy ISA's but have a couple of questions I can't find the answers to. Any advice would be greatly appreciated: I already have a cash ISA that has a fair chunk of money in it, but I haven't paid into it at all this year - just received interest on it. Does this mean I can't…

Help to Buy and Cash ISA
Hi, Could anyone clarify for me whether I can keep my cash ISA as it is not from this tax year as well as open a HTB ISA? I last paid into it in April 2014 and withdrew a little June 2015. This is the only part I am slightly confused about. Thanks in advance!

Would I be allowed a help to buy ISA?
I know that I'd be allowed to take advantage of a help to buy mortgage, but I'm not sure about the ISA. I thought it would be better asking here as I'm not sure if all banks have the same rules. Anyway, the complication is that about 10 years ago I bought a house with my then girlfriend and was too young to know any…

Keep Cash ISA or open Help to Buy ISA?
Hi, I was hoping for some advice on by best option to end up with the best deposit for our first house. I have around £6000 in a Cash ISA with HSBC, with an interest rate of 1.3% AER, 1.1% after 11 Jan 2016. I have paid into this ISA this tax year. I gather that if I open a Help to Buy ISA (Halifax offers 4% AER so seems…

Inheritance
Hi, I am inheriting approx. 250k and I currently earn approx 25k a year. The problem with investments as I see it is they tie you in, so you can't release any money you as need it. Is there a way to invest 250k to get a good return, but I can also dip into for cash as required? Apologies for the naïve question! I've been…

Tracker Fund - Go direct or via platform?
Thanks to this forum, I have realised that an Offshore Bond fund I have had for 15 years is not only a bit rubbish now, but has been costing a furtune in fees. I've decided to dump it finally and opt for a cheap tracker - probably VLS-80 or similar. I had assumed cheapest is best by going direct, but could someone point…

Help to Buy ISA limit based on Mortgage Value or Property Value?
Hi, A little confused with this one as I have some conflicting information. Martin Lewis is saying that this is only valid on properties up to £250,000 (£450,000 in London), but as I read this from Nationwide Help to Buy ISA page... "The scheme applies to properties in the UK, purchased using a mortgage of up to £250,000…

Surprisingly confused by Martin
Hello. I have been following the development of news about htb isa and listened to many programmes and read blogs of Martin, such as guides etc. However, I am either dumb or his explanations never went into enough detail. He kept saying that you cant have cash isa and htb isa opened in the same tax but you can have one…

Account that will hold inheritance in trust for a child?
Hello, I've tried looking online for this but seem to keep running into info on Child Trust Fund accounts or finding accounts that are not suitable. My child has been left money in a relative's will, with the stipulation that he cannot access it until he is 18 years old. I need to set up a bank account for this purpose. I…
