Hi, I would like to know from other fellow diyers how much time do they spend researching markets and products for their investments. Also do you buy specific magazines and publications on a weekly basis or do you just stick with the mainstream papers business sections? Thanks

Along the lines of saving and investing would be good… I currently listen to motley fool (the fortnightly), FT money and Which. Has anybody got any good’uns they can share? Thanks!

Ulster Bank: Special Interest Deposit Account
I was wondering if anyone has recently opened an Ulster Bank "Special Interest Deposit Account" There are some contradictory statements on this forum about the rules of this account. While the web page of the Bank states that the maximum that you can pay each month is £1000, some members state that they were able to pay in…

Looking for a decent instant access or 1 yr fixed rtn
Have looked at MoneySupermaket and CTM, don't seem to have a full set of all the main banks offering. I am looking to tie up a few thousand £s for up to 12 months, not sure where to find the best rates. (I have already used my full ISA allocation for 13/14) Thanks F

Compensation Scheme for Nominee Shareholdings
The £85,000 compensation limit for cash savings is widely known and often publicised in the press. What is less widely known is that the compensation limit for shares held in nominee accounts is only £50,000. Those who invest in shares ISAs are compelled to use nominee accounts for their holdings under the government rules…

Whittards 'Tea investment'
Interesting mail/survey from Whittards suggests they are considering a novel investment. Probably still a long way off, but the proposal may be invest £1000 for 3 years and get £100 of free tea a year plus a discount on every purchase (10%?). After 3 years you get the £1000 back. Given that we only drink tea and spend…

Joint Account versus Power of Attorney
My dad is in his late sixties and wants me to open a joint account with him that will allow me to access his £40k savings if something happens to him or he becomes incapacitated. I have reservations that if I get made redundant I won't be able to claim Jobseekers or Housing Benefit—I understand that this is the case if you…

Interest - Non Tax Payer
Hi, I was wondering if anybody could clarify what happens with tax on interest on your savings. I understand that banks automatically take off 20% and if you are below the threshold you fill out a form so tax is not deducted. I have read HMRC website but still a bit confused. I have always been a tax payer since leaving…

Larger monthly payments and savings accounts
I've tried reading all the guides but at the moment I'm no closer to working out the best way forward. My partner and I are in a fortunate position where we will be able to save quite a substantial chunk of money per month. The aim is to collate enough together to put down the deposit on a house. We obviously want to put…

£1000 > £10,000 in 1 year
Sounds very unrealistic perhaps, 10x your initial investment in one year, not common at all.. right? What I want to know though is with hard work and time, lets say a few hours a week for a year maybe 6 hours a week on average, so about 300 hours in total to turn £1000 of your cash into £10,000. So that essentially makes…
