Saving for children
We have a 6 week old son, and want to start saving for his future. Our plan is to save £80 a month until he's 16, which would give us £15,500 roughly + interest. Having looked at ISA accounts and bonds, the returns are not that great. We currently have 21 year left on our mortgage, and have calculated that if we overpaid…

BullionVault or Bank Government Bonds
I have some money in a two year bond. The first year is up but I have another year to go. I am considering putting the money into BullionVault.com . My biggest concern is safety. But I would consider BullionVault more secure then banks in a way because the gold and silver is not leveraged. The gold and silver is allocated…

Combining past ISA money?
This is probably a stupid question but I noticed that some of the best rates are for a set (quite large) amount of money - i.e. HSBC require a minimum of £15,000.00. Can my husband and I join our old ISAs together so we can put it all in this ISA or do we have to have money all from one named person? Does that make sense?…

Can I save money in wife's account?
I have a bills account giving 3% gross interest in my name and wife's name. I work, my wife doesn't. Can I change the name on the account to wife's name only, and put my wages and savings in to it? That way the full 3% will be paid as she doesn't pay tax.

Final salary pension decision
I am about to receive a final salary pension from a previous employer. I have a choice of £12000 CPI linked income and a lump sum of £36000 or a £10000 CPI linked income and a lump sum of £66000. I intend to keep in full time work for a short period but may look to go part time shortly to enhance my free time. I have been…

opinions needed on savings
First post for me so hope I'm in the right place. I just came into a fair amount of money about £300k. I don't have a mortage or debts so want to put this in safe and steady fairly easy to get at savings. I've done look looking around and met with my bank advisor (he wasn't too helpful and I felt a bit bulldozed) and come…

Cash ISA as 'gift'
Hello, I have a question to ask about Cash ISA's, the gifting of money and inheritance tax/probate. My wife's grandfather recently passed away and years before his death he has my mother in law open up a Cash Isa so he could put money away for her so when he died she would not struggle financially when he had gone. What…

Best thing to do with deposit money
I have a lump sum I'd like to use for a deposit when buying a home. I've no idea how long it will be until I need it however (could be 3 months, could be 3 years) so I'll like to get it out of my current account so that it might earn a little bit of interest, and more importantly so I don't end up spending it on something…

Faster Payments to N&P E-Regular Saver
I've just opened an E-Regular Saver with N&P and want to make my first deposit. In their FAQ they talk about CHAPS and BACS, and having to use different sort codes, but there's no mention of FP. Anyone know if I can just transfer to the acc. no. and sort code (08-60-81) given in my confrmation email, and whether that's FP…

M&G Index Tracker
I know almost nothing about investing, but hope someone can explain simply. I have been investing £25 per month for 3 years for my grandson in F&C's Childrens' Plan, but have now closed this because of the new charge. I hope to invest £30 per month until he is 21 (18 years time) in the M&G Index Tracker directly with M&G…

CGT on Sharesaves...?
Could anyone summarise the rules on shares bought through official company sharesave schemes please? My understanding is that once you actually get to the action date of turning your monthly savings into shares, you have a limited time in which to shelter them. What about if you took up the options but still hold the shares…

yield on funds
When I read articles on investing in funds they always say something like 'up 20% on year and yield of 4%' Are these the figures before the total charges are taken off or are these allowed for? And in this example does it mean that the fund has grown 20% and out of that you will get a dividend of 4% ie you would only get…
