To spay or not to spay?
Bailie's 6 months old now and it has always been my intention to have her spayed at this age. However, I spoke to a woman today who has a 2 year old female Golden Retriever. Her vet told her that it was best to leave it until between the first and second seasons. I've looked on the internet and there is plenty of support…

Help with dog walking attire.
Gitdog is needing a couple of hours a day and I am well out of practice due to mutt being so wobbly on her pins at the end. I need waterproof walking shoes that last (not boots) - I've just had a karrimor pair and regatta pair that have both worn out in less than 2 months. I am heavy footed but this is ridiculous. Ideally…

Can you home-clip puppy's claws?
The cat-clipping thread has made me wonder... is it okay to clip a puppy's claws yourself? I know the vet used ordinary nail clippers but I wouldn't want to try it without knowing how much of the claw is "live"... We've booked into a groomers next week to have it done but just wondered. Thanks

Do You Own A Collie or Other Herding-type Breed?
This includes Border Collies, Rough Collies (Lassie), Smooth Collies, Shetland Sheepdogs, Bearded Collies, Australian Shepherd and Kelpie and some xbreeds from these lines. Are you aware of the gene mutation MDR1 and it's implications for your dog? Do you know that these breeds may have a fatal reaction to wormers that…

Possibly leaving cats alone for 36 hours, any advice?
We are going away in a couple of weeks time. We will be leaving at 7am on Saturday morning and returning Sunday evening around 7pm. I am trying to find someone we (and the cats) know and trust to come and see to them on Saturday evening and Sunday morning but am not having much luck. I will not put them in a Cattery as…

You know that dog I wasn't keeping?
Well guess what. He's wormed his untrained little way in and it's pretty much a done deal. :o (Yes I know, you all told me it would happen.) He is still nameless as me and mum can't agree on anything we both like. Currently sticking with "gitdog" and "Oi, pack it in." So I'm now on the insurance hunt. Petplan has changed a…

Kitten food
I've just adopted two lovely 14 week old kittens. I'm currently feeding them pouches of Felix kitten food, as that's what they came with, but wondered what people would recommend as a good, reasonably priced food for older kittens. At the moment, between the 2 of them they are getting through about 8 sachets a day, which…

What does life cover really mean?
I just wanted some advice regarding the policy I've got for our dog. He's a nearly 6 year old bulldog, and it took out life cover with axa a few years back. I had a similar policy for our previous dog and never had any nasty surprises at renewal time, but with this one, the price has increased astronomically each year. 2…

Her 2 cousins are also fighting for their lives at the Vets this morning. I will let you know how they are doing when we hear anything. I just hope these 2 dont die as well. The Vet has…

Dogs separated whilst eating
I'm currently having to separate my two dogs whilst they are eating as the youngster (17mths) is extremely protective of his food when my oldie (11yrs) is anywhere near. It's got to the point where he will attack my old boy (who incidentally gives as good as he gets!). Ideally I would like to feed all my dogs together (I…

Ideas to help keep our dogs warm during the winter
I'm hoping this thread will help others and not just myself. So if you have any idea, post them in here so others can benefit. I am looking for ideas on keeping a small dog warm this winter, especially at night in a fairly cold kitchen. I've considered electric blankets, but seems a waste really and there's that chance the…

Dogs teeth
We have a rescue dog who we have had for 4 years, he is adult, we don't know how old. When we go him his teeth were covered in tartar and we have tried chew sticks, bones etc. We have tried tooth brushing as well. His breath is now quite smelly and his gums a little red, the vet has advised a dental clean under anesthetic.…

Dog's bottom issues
Zara had her anal glands emptied several times now but there was not much there anyway not enough to cause the issues she is having: riding her butt on grass biting/chewing her bottom She is regularly wormed, on Orijen food wise, gets extra fibre - what can this be? Not asking for vet advise, will see a vet with her but so…

Dogs and laser pens!
So my OH got a laser pen to play with the cats with....... that is until our pup saw the laser, came charging over and knocked the kittys for six! I would've never thought about a laser pen and dogs, but he goes absolutely mental for it. He knows that the little pen is what causes the dot, and if it's on a table will sit…

Cat food - cat prone to cystitis
Hi We have a rescue cat that recently recovered from a painful bout of cystitis and the vet said there are some brands of food that are better for cats prone to this condition. He's recovered now thankfully I have noticed occasional spots of urine in the litter tray and then he pees normally later on so I think it might be…
