Kitten food

I've just adopted two lovely 14 week old kittens.

I'm currently feeding them pouches of Felix kitten food, as that's what they came with, but wondered what people would recommend as a good, reasonably priced food for older kittens. At the moment, between the 2 of them they are getting through about 8 sachets a day, which is about right according to the box, but it seems an amazing waste of packaging using so many pouches!

When do kittens migrate on to regular adult cat food? 1 years ish?

I fed my old cats on IAMs senior, but its been a long time since I last had a kitten, and the catfood market is rather more diverse than it was back then!

I will probably order their food and litter in bulk online, so any suggestions of where best to buy wouldbe great too!

    8 sachets a day!!!!

I feed mine (12 weeks and 9 weeks) a mix of wet and dry.

They get 1/4 packet of felix in the morning each and then c40g each of Eden dry cat food left down all day for them to go to whenever they want.

They also get a raw chicken wing each every other day and the occasional treat of natural yoghurt or kitten milk.

Last vet visit (a week friday) the vet commented on how well they're developing and the condition of my Bengal's coat. They seem very happy.

The wet sachet protein content is very low and it's not very good quality, hence having to feed 8 sachets a day.
    I have a simple philosophy:
Fill what's empty. Empty what's full. Scratch where it itches.

aren't they eating dry cat biscuits as well as the pouches?

I adopted both my cats at around 8 weeks old, both had half a pouch of kitten food, twice a day, plus dry kitten/cat biscuits, from that time.

My current kit doesn't really care for the pouch food at all, he tends to just lick the jelly off it, so he usually gets complete food cat biscuits only, with the occasional half-pouch of kitten food.

Kitten food is a clever marketing ploy. Not really necessary. Bozita is excellent cat food food - am probably going to put mine back on that soon. Or Smilla or Animondi Carni - not available in supermarkets. In fact most supermarket pet food is expensive rubbish. On principle I do not feed IAMs as they test on animals - I feed mine Burns dried.

currently 50% butchers classic (meat in tins) - supermarket
    50% Burns fish - online

Recommend Bozita (wet) and Orijen (Dry) ..
Both are expensive but they are quality foods.
Whiskas, Felix, Iams and general supermarket cat food are junk (online research will provide you with some horror stories), especially the 'Iams family' of foods as the previous poster states, they 'test' on animals.

Wow 8 sachets! I have two maine coon x bsh, and I feed them one can of animonda carny a day between them (1/2 in the morning, 1/2 in the evening), plus some dry applaws a couple of times a day too. This is plenty and they're a big breed! They eat it all, and I like it because they're in good condition and their poos and wees don't smell anymore. I order from zooplus, I think you can get 5% off your first order and free delivery over £25 :)

Animonda is like £4.50 per 6 cans, so it works out the same value as a packet of 12 sachets. I also buy the applaws in 2kg bags for £13ish. As it's higher in meat content, I've found it lasts longer as I don't have to feed them as much because a smaller amount satisfies them.
  • Wow 8 seems a lot my new kitten (13weeks) eats 2 sachets a day, he has an endless supply of dry food but doesnt eat much and water.
