How to work out pensionable pay.
My husband's salary includes a car allowance. He also claims childcare vouchers. He pays 6% pension contributions. I'm trying to do a spreadsheet to work out the affect of increasing pension contributions on his take home pay but I'm struggling because I don't know if I should be including the car allowance for this. I…

Relief at source
When I pay money into my private pension I get 20% tax relief at source paid into my pension account. Is it a tax rule that the 20% has to be paid into the pension account? Is there any way to get the 20% immediately?

Pension scheme included in base salary
I recently got a job offer stating that the participation in company's stakeholder pension scheme is included in the base salary. What does that mean? Would I need to sacrifice part of my base salary to contribute to the pension scheme or would my employer do that?

Carrying forward past year's allowance - which year does it come from?
In terms of carrying forward past years' unused tax allowance for pension contributions, I can find lots of scenarios that clearly show that you can carry forward and use past years' unused pension tax relief allowance, but it's not clear from the explanations I have read how this works, specifically in terms of where…

Miss sold pension can I reclaim contributions?
Hi, I had a part time college lecturer's post back in 2007, as part of my employment with the college (hereafter named partner college) I was sold a pension. Deductions were made from my pay over the next 2 years, and the partner college also contributed to my pension. I have all my old payslips and have estimated the…

BT pension- Aged 57, take it now or defer?
Key facts: I left BT on 31st December 2014. Pension would have been £12,695.79 if pension started that day. If I had left one month later on 31st January 2015 Pension would have been £12,799.29 if pension started that day. By the end of May the pension would have been £13,165. I understood that before I decided to leave. I…

Employer's pension scheme for a one-year fixed-term post?
Hi there, Just when I'd made all my plans for a gentle glide into retirement (SIPP opened, contributions and withdrawals over the next few years planned) I have now been offered a fixed term (1 year) low salary part-time job, with the option of joining the firm's pension scheme. It's a defined benefit scheme. I don't think…

Transfer Teachers Pension
I joined teachers pensions in June 2000 and left teaching in April 2013. I worked for a private company from April 2013 to September 2014 and have a very small Scottish Widows pension which I already know will be worth virtually nothing. In October of 2014 I joined the Civil Service and opted for a Nuvos pension which will…

Accommodation options for my mum (and dad) after suffering a stroke
Hi all, I wanted to see what options my mother has with regards to accommodation as she suffered a sever stroke a few weeks ago. My mother and father live together and own a home together. My father passed away last year and obviously left everything to my mother. There are various bonds, accounts and shares as well as the family home. I'm not sure on the total value. State Pension deferral
My wife deferred her pension January 14, she continues to work part time. She is a non tax payer as she earns approx £7000 per year. If she draws her deferred pension now as a lump sum (£7250) I guess she will pay tax on everything over £10000. She is retiring at some point in 2015 but hasn't decided when exactly. So is it…

Back-date private pension against higher earning years
Hi there First time post, so please be gentle :) I've just completed my wife's self-assessment tax return and last year (2013/14) she made a private pension lump sum payment. This has increased the higher rate threshold for the year, but she wasn't exceeding it this year anyway. However, she was exceeding it in 2010/11…
