Cleaning pans
Other people have saucepans and frying pans that look like new. Mine get all crudded up on the bottom and outsides. Is it that other people don't cook or that they wash their pans better/more frequently? How often do you wash the outsides of your pans?

which beef for a stew ..can I use a cheap roasting joint?
Any advice please. I'm vegetarian but cook my husband a roasting beef joint from Asda (about £7 per kilo) in my slow cooker. I get the largest I can, cook it on High for about 7 hours, and he likes it, says it's very tender. When cool, he slices it, and I freeze portions with the gravy. Now he wants a stew or casserole…

Weekly Flylady Thread 16th April 2018
What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to make the whole task easier and quicker. We also…

Veg prep and freezing question
Hi! My Dad needs to eat a lower potassium diet these days due to health problems. According to his dietician it means the majority of the veg he eats needs to be parboiled in lots of water (to release some of the potassium into the water) before then being cooked by what ever method the recipe dictates (eg roasted / boiled…

storing/preserving chillis?
We've got a bag of scotch bonnets and a little pack of other chillis, best before date tomorrow 14th. The chillis look to be in good condition still but I'm not sure how long they'll keep, especially given that only one of us likes chilli! I was wondering how best to preserve or store them so that we don't end up throwing…

can I substitute sugar syrup for golden syrup in a recipe?
It's a traybake. Will sugar syrup hold it together as well as golden or will it be too runny and I should really just walk to Tesco? Thanks.

Has the simple living thread disappeared?
Hi all I’ve been reading this from the beginning this week and really enjoying it. Tonight when I tried to move forward a page on my iPad as I had it open from earlier, I received an invalid thread message. I now can’t find it :(

I'm always cold when I get into bed but if I turn up the heating I bake in the middle of the night. I've some old patterns for knitted bed jackets, does anyone still use one? Are they any good?

terrific vegan chocolate cake
I wasn't quite sure whether to post this, as it isn't quite MSE, but know that quite a few people on this board shave to deal with intolerances and allergies. My grandchildren have a very good friend who is severely allergic to egg, and they have often asked me to try to make cakes for him - everyday stuff is fine, bur a…
