Monthly meal plan
Almost there with my Tesco order and meal plan for March. I have a bunch of meat obsessives. Here's what I have so far, only 1 day to find and I think it should be lamb, but it's quite expensive, so I ration that. 1 - Lasagne - Beef 2 - Shepherds Pie - Beef 3 - Hamburgers - Beef 4 - Spag bol - Beef 5 - Lasagne - Beef 6 -…

Eggs - why are they yucky now?
I'm not that old but i remember frying eggs years ago that were big, rich orange or yellow and had no yucky bits. every egg that i crack these days has loads of white stringy bits attached to the yolk (looks like an umbilical cord but white), some more than others. i've tried organic, barn, free range everything going and…

Weekly shop
How much do you think is a realistic weeky grocery budget. We are a family of 4. 2 adults, 4yr old & 7yr old, we have 3 small dogs and a cat. I buy the cheapest cat and dog food from Costco. DH has a packed lunch 6 nights a week (works nights) and DD has a packed lunch every day for school. I try to cook an extra portion…

Daily OS 20 February, 2007
As a lot of people seem to like this idea let's get it ready for tomorrow morning. If you're starting a Daily Thread can you copy and paste this into the top post? Hi, this is the Daily Thread for 20/ 02/2007. This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything OS and maybe a little bit more. It’s…

Sturgeon?
A get-together with my brothers and sisters last week reminded me that as kids in the 1950's we often ate sturgeon. It must have been fairly cheap to buy - or we would not have had it .... and we all remembered that it was a most tasty, solid, even 'meaty' fish. Why do we never now see it for sale?

Feeding a Family of 4 - Realistic budget
Hi I'm new to posting, having lurked for ages. My current spending habits in terms of food have been nothing short of ridiculous. There are 2 adults and 2 kids in our house. To be totally and brutally honest I have no idea what we spend per week on food but I know it's something scary. To give you a flavour: 1. I never do…

Who buys this stuff?
In M&S at the weekend, and noticed they were selling pre-packaged meals of.....Jacket potato and cheese....which consisted of...Jacket potato and cheese. Can't remember the cost; something daft. Now I do like some of the stuff they have there, but who would actually buy a jacket potato with cheese when you can do the same…

My Car Has A Strange Smell - Any Tips On How To Clean It??
Long story short - bought a banger to tide me over and it smells inside. Its not a mechanical smell. Ive cleaned the carpets and seats with a rug doctor using the carpet detergent and upholstery cleaner. Now the carpets are significantly cleaner. Is there anymore I can do bar ripping the carpets out??? Cheers Lenny

Thanks Old Stylers who came up trumps
I posted a thread last week about making your home look inviting initially on Old Style though it later got moved about a bit, because I was putting my house on the market. It went on at 2.00pm today and sold at 2.15pm to the first person who saw it - thanks I am sure to all the great tips (its also never looked cleaner!)…

Caster sugar v granulated sugar
I have discovered by accident that in most cases it makes no difference to your baking if you substitute cheaper granulated sugar for the more expensive caster sugar given in the recipe. I also use Value or Smart Price everything else (flour, butter etc) with the exception of eggs which my ethics dictate must be free…

Don't Mop Your Laminate Floor?
If you get a microfibre mop, take the cloth bit off and wet it (with just water, or add cleaner to the water), then wring it out before putting it back on, it will be fine. You're just not supposed to get it WET wet, or let water lie on it - a wipe over with a damp MF mop won't do it any harm at all. I've treated mine like…

Shrunken woollies: A 'cure'
Thought I'd share the following success story after I accidentally scooped up my favourite - and handwash only - merino wool mittens into a standard 40-degree machine wash load. As you can imagine, the gloves emerged mini-me size. So, I soaked them in a generous application of hair conditioner in cold water for an hours or…

OS school project - what paint for models?
My partner's little girl needs to make a junk model of her "dream house" for school next week. We've collected a load of boxes, bottles and the like, but I'm not sure what sort of paint will work best. I seem to recall that poster paint flakes off from coated cardboard and plastic and that there is some trick with mixing…
