Will any wireless thermostat work with my combi boiler?
Looking to hopefully upgrade from our current older Danfoss wireless thermostat. Not got my eye on anything particular but would like a few more functions. My boiler is an Ideal Logic c33 combi so would like to know if I am restricted to certain stats only? Thank you

Kitchen tap requires a good few turns until water flows at a nice speed, can it be fixed?
Just moved house. Kitchen tap works perfectly fine except to get cold water out you have to turn the knob quite a lot. You twist it once, and it dribbles out. Twist it again, still dribbling out Twist it a third time, comes out enough to rinse a plate. This is really quite annoying, eg filling a glass of water or trying to…

Builders defaced brickwork below dpc.
So as the title suggests, builders have defaced some brickwork to a friends home. They removed an old driveway, to install a new one. The damaged bricks are below the level of the dpc, and will be covered up by new paving stones. Should the bricks be repaired to offset the chance of rising damp? Or are they fine as they…

Installing a light in a terrace shared alleyway - do I have to agree with RWP neighbours?
Hi all, Apologies in advance if this is something obvious, but we've recently moved into a house - it's a Victorian terrace with a covered alley/ginnel running between us and our neighbour. The "front" doors are halfway up the alleyway, facing each other (so on the side of each house). The alley is covered by our…

Convert conservatory to patio - Damp proof course?
Hi We currently have an old conservatory which doesn't get used as much as it used to. We are thinking of taking it down and converting it to a patio/outside eating space. I'm hoping it won't be a major job as there is no dwarf wall and I was looking at some very thin paving to replace the current flooring to try and…

Planning commercial - implied permission
Hi all. I wonder can anyone tell me the rules which stops the install of a shed in the front of a house does this apply to commercial properties? I know generally a shed in the back garden is fine under permitted development and would likely be the same for the side of the house up to the "front elevation" but what about…

Zanussi gas hob won't stay lit
Hi all I have got a freestanding Zanussi gas cooker. None of the 4 gas burners will stay lit. They light ok but when I let the knob go, the gas goes out. The only odd thing is that if I light the small oven/grill directly below the hob and leave it to warm up, the gas burners stay lit! I know with it being a gas cooker I…

Planning and front garden storage
Hello all. Just wondering if anyone has ever been successful in obtaining planning for a storage unit ie shed in their front garden. I think I'm correct in the understanding that you can't put anything like that forward of the front wall of the house. The front garden is about 100ft x 100ft and we have a 2 metre fence at…

Chimney removal
Hi all, we are in the process of buying a end terrace house and to make room in the living room we thought about removing the chimney and I was wondering if anyone’s done this or had any advice? The chimney is joined to the middle terrace so I assume we need there permission to do this?

Is that worth to convert the offshoot loft into a bathroom?
Hi all I am looking for some advice please. I recently purchased a Victorian terrace house. The layout is very typical, the main building plus a offshoot building. The main loft area was converted into a room many years ago, but the offshoot part was left as a void space. I need to replace the roof covering and strength…

Open Plan Kitchen/Diner Extension possibilities
Hi all, Been looking on the forums for a while now trying to get some idea on what could be possible for what I would like to do to my new house! Context: We are moving from a 3 bed semi, where my office space is situated in the corner of the living room, to a 4 bed detached. The new house does not have any office space so…

Absolute beginner's guide to extending house needed
We're keen to add a single-storey extension to our house. We know exactly what we want in terms of what it should look like, but don't know how to get there as we've never extended before and know very little about the process! The most immediate issue is how to work out the total cost, as we're not sure if we can afford…

Kitchen/shed extension
Hi all, Recently moved into a house, 1930’s with solid walls. The kitchen has been extended (on the cheap I think) into what used to be a shed. It seems the insulation is slim to none as its always freezing, condensation on the walls and black mould when you move the kickboards. Put a dehumidifier in there, showing 80-90%…

Filtered water system
Anyone have any recommendations of 'proper' filtered water systems that they have in their house? (Something more advanced than BRITA) as thats the bog standard. Im looking for a kettle or quite possibly a bigger version than that to have in the kitchen. Many thanks,

Disagreement between architect and builder
We are having a loft extension put in to our bungalow at the moment. We chose a local architect who had done this conversion in several of the same house in our area. Our builder was recommended to us and was in the middle of the quotes we received. The builder has been on site for a week and has expressed frustration with…

Extension foundation alternative
I'm nearing a decision on a shortlist of builders to do a single-storey side and rear extension for a shell only where I would do most of the internal works. Some of the quotes have been within the budget and so I've brought the shortlist down to two reputable building firms who I've vetted and received good feedback on.…

How practical are black taps/showers?
Hi everyone, I'm currently planning to have a new bathroom installed and love the mono look with black fittings (faucets, shower head, shower frame etc). My question is to people who currently have these fittings or have experience with them in the past. How durable are they? Does limescale show any worse than on chrome?…

Collasped bathroom ceiling
On the 4th January 2021 I had a new boiler installed. A combi. On the 19th jan I noticed water coming from the ceiling. Its a false ceiling and I could see a dip and a tear like stretch on the plaster. My son went into the attic and saw what the issue was immediately and took photos. They had fitted the condensation pipe…

Minimum set back distance for extension wall?
Our neighbours are proposing a rear single storey infill extension to their property: it's a terrace adjoining ours. The plans show the new side wall of the extension to be set back 6 inches from the property boundary line (our fence). The height will be 3 metres, brick built, flat roof. What is the minimum set back…
