Planning and front garden storage

Hello all. Just wondering if anyone has ever been successful in obtaining planning for a storage unit ie shed in their front garden. I think I'm correct in the understanding that you can't put anything like that forward of the front wall of the house. The front garden is about 100ft x 100ft and we have a 2 metre fence at both sides and also at the front (it's 2 metres in from the boundary). We will also be installing 2 metre high gates. So nothing we have will be visible to the neighbours and they have said they're not  bothered what we put up. We need it to store ladders and scaffold towers that DH uses to cut our own hedges as well as using for work, we cannot get these round to the back garden easily as the path down the side is very narrow and really hard to carry things round.
So we had thought of either building a shed or for better security DH was considering a dark green shipping container.  Again even the roof of this wouldn't be visible from the road as we also have hedges that are higher than the fence. Your experience, comments and thoughts are most welcome. Thank you in advance.

From your description, I really wouldn't worry about it. Sounds like a "temporary structure" anyway (even if it ends up being there forever)

One of my customers put a  bike storage shed in her front garden. She applied for planning permission, her neighbours wrote in support of her, and it was passed.  Her front garden was lower than street level so it wasn't particularly visible behind a hedge. This was on a private (unadopted) road, where all the house styles were different, so there was no planning precident in that street.

This "temporary structure" thing really is a bit of a myth.

Maybe in residential situations in which case I admit I didn't know that.  On horse yards it's a big deal as the council check that we *can* move our "mobile" field shelters ... We "can", but only theoretically as we'd need a huge tractor to do it. That's good enough for them!
  • Thank you for replying . I did check the temporary structures regs and that seems to apply only if the building will only be there for 28 days. Looks like I'll be applying for planning permission.

Slightly from left-field here, but I used to live in a certain Garden City where caravans were barred from being kept on front driveways and in front gardens. Motor Caravans and Motorhomes were a different matter. As they are motor vehicles the Council couldn't do anything about it. As you mention a shipping container that's pretty much like a van without chassis, running gear and wheels.  So, what about a suitably sized old van, especially as it won't be visible from outside the property and in no way can be described as a 'permanent structure'?
