How practical are black taps/showers?

Hi everyone,
I'm currently planning to have a new bathroom installed and love the mono look with black fittings (faucets, shower head, shower frame etc). My question is to people who currently have these fittings or have experience with them in the past. How durable are they? Does limescale show any worse than on chrome? Is cleaning any different?
Thanks,

Swash

My old neighbour has a black kitchen sink and struggles to keep it clean.
Do you live in a hard water area? Our old house was in 17th hardest area in the country, we have since moved to the 7th hardest and installed a water softener. I wish we'd had one in our old house.

    Hi Slinky,

We live in a soft water area. We currently have a black sink but chrome taps. I hadn't even thought about sink colour until you mentioned it. I am more inclined towards a white sink though I think.
    Thanks for your input!

  • We have black tap, sink waste, shower and shower screen framing. The only minor irritation is how easily toothpaste residue shows on the sink waste. We’ve used the bathroom daily for 6 months since and it’s been no problem at all. I love it. My towel rail is also black and does show dust, but easily solved. I don’t notice water marks in the shower at all really.

Thanks very much @SameOldRoundabout that's really helpful. Do you use regular bathroom cleaning products on it, or are the likes of Flash etc too harsh?

  • Well I wipe down daily with standard Flash wipes, and do a weekly deep clean using Method bathroom cleaner and it’s done no harm yet!

I had dark brown for years since it was the bees knees and it showed the toothpaste marks every time you cleaned your teeth.
It was the bane of my life.

  • No criticism meant here, but to all those who say they can see toothpaste in their sinks, don't you wipe down the sink after cleaning your teeth?  I only ask because I've got an electric toothbrush which definitely spatters across the sink (white) and splashguard tiles so wiping down the sink comes as second nature.  Just wondering.

I was thinking that.  Just because chrome might not show it as much, it doesn't mean it should be there.   If it needs cleaning, it needs cleaning. 😬
