Building compliance certificate help
Good afternoon I'm hoping someone can give me some advice. I am looking to sell my house and the buyers solicitors haslve raised an issue. The chimney breast at the back of my house has been removed downstairs but not on the first floor. They have requested a copy of the building compliance certificate for this work but…

Damp around patio door
We get some mould on our inside walls near our patio door during winter. I've always assumed it's condensation related. It's been better this year since we started opening the curtains when we go to bed so the air circulates more. I've just noticed the wall outside looks damp and has moss on it though and it doesn't look…

Soldier line of bricks above door & window issue
Hi, we are looking at buying a house which we viewed recently but I noticed an issue with the pointing around the soldier line of bricks above two windows and a door. It is crumbling/cracked but no other areas seem to be affected and the pvc doesn’t look to be bowing. They are all in the same side of the house. Just…

SOLVED. How to fix cracking/peeling stringer along stairs
Is this caulking along the the top of the stringer edge where it meets the wall? Whatever, it looks like it is chipping and cracking. How best might I fix this and repaint and what tools/materials would I need and what grade,or size, or ..? Here's some distant and macro cam shots:

SOLVED. What grade sandpaper for repainting staircase in existing colour?
So the wooden staircase is painted in dulux egshell claimed to be "self undercoating". Staircase has not been painted in 5 years but when it was it was pretty much the same colour, eggshell, but not dulux it was Johnstones. In some areas the paint is fine, but in some it looks thin and worn out - mainly on the handrail as…

EICR Electrical report
Hi all, I had an EICR recently. We have not too long moved in to a 1920s house and wish to do some decorating which may include some skimming of walls. I would say 3 of the 4 bedrooms need an extra socket or two. Downstairs is probably alright. The kitchen was done a couple of years ago so has new wiring but the rest of…

Painting/decorating advice needed
New to DIY'ing, attempted to paint strip a wall as it had bad peeling and flaking paint but turned into a mess. We have been scraping back to the bare wall but now have been told it will need PVA'ing and plastering as you cant paint onto a bare wall. How hard is plastering? The original goal was just to re-paint 3 walls,…

Huge wasp's nest in newly-bought house
It took a few weeks and a long ladder to get into the loft and the news is mixed. The loft IS insulated (and quite well) despite the EPC guy assuming that it wasn't. However, there is an enormous wasp's nest in the eaves. It is almost spherical and getting on for 2 ft in diameter. Obviously (hopefully?) it is unoccupied…

Garden room in Scotland
Hi I want to build a garden room and attach it to the house. I know a building warrant is required to knock through the house wall for the door that would connect them but if that door is an exterior door would the garden room (no plumbing, no sleeping) also require a building warrant? I have tried reading the guidance but…

Duralay Timbermate XL, foil which way up?
Hi guys, I have had my bottom floor in my house laminated recently With Quickstep Laminate. I had ordered the Duralay Timbermate XL underlay which my laminate fitter has put down over concrete floor. After the job was complete I realised the underlay was put down foil side up, from my understanding and that of Duralay the…

How to locate water leak under garden/drive?
Hi all, Last week Severn Trent got in contact to say that the reading they took a few weeks back was unexpectedly high. I checked the meter and it was even higher again. I shut off the water inside the house with the stop tap, and the meter was still going round - therefore there seems to be a leak between the stop tap,…

Big hole - cover or fill?
Hi I recently went to my parents house where my mum is looking after my terminally ill father. They recently had a new central heating installed in the bungalow and had the old boiler removed. Where the boiler used to be there is now a fairly large hole in the wall where the flue went. They have covered it with cardboard…

Worried after ceiling leak
I'm just here for advice because I'm worrying and knowing so little about houses and DIY I don't know if I'm worrying unnecessarily. Today, I put the shower on and while waiting for the water to heat up popped out of the room for maybe five minutes. When I came back, the shower head had fallen out of its cradle and was…

Kitchen advice
We are currently planning a new kitchen and looking for ideas. Will be looking online initially for obvious reasons, and venturing out to showrooms when we can. Ive been told by a few people to get as good worktops as we can, as they finish the kitchen off. Ive been told to avoid laminate worktops and go for 'stone' (didnt…
