SOLVED. What grade sandpaper for repainting staircase in existing colour?

So the wooden staircase is painted in dulux egshell claimed to be "self undercoating". Staircase has not been painted in 5 years but when it was it was pretty much the same colour, eggshell, but not dulux it was Johnstones. In some areas the paint is fine, but in some it looks thin and worn out - mainly on the handrail as to be expected . So what grade sandpaper might I need - am I going to remove the paint (with grade 60 or 80?) or key it (using grade 120 or 220)? Please can you indicate which grade I need for which areas.

You're just trying to key the surface, so a fine grade, around 200 is best. I tend to buy bulk packs of sanding pads from Screwfix for this sort of thing.
Try a flexible filler such as Geocel Painters Mate.2 -
