Cleaning terminals after battery leakage
I've got a Cateye bicycle light that hasn't been used for some time. Batteries have leaked and the insides are covered in that white crystalline stuff. What's the best way of cleaning out the inside of the light (especially the terminals)? It's one of those lights with multiple flashing modes so I want to avoid damage to…

Breathable external paints
Hi all, I have a cob cottage. Looking to get the outside painted. Obviously crucial to use a breathable paint. What the most cost efficient breathable paint to use? Sandtex do a breathable paint, but I dont think its truly 'breathable'. Is there a lime based paint that doesnt cost the earth? Thanks

How to get the best deal for a kitchen?
Morning folks :) I have read a lot here about kitchens and I would like to ask you what's the best way to go for a good deal? From what I understand it would be better to go to Wickes/B&Q to get an initial quote with the design and then go to Benchmarx for a similar deal and find a Joiner who has over 60% discount on…

Air purifiers
Hi all, Firstly i think this thread is in the correct forum category. I am researching the different air purifiers available on the market as i suffer from hayfever and asthma. I have a very basic plug in ionizer which does a reasonable job in a single room but have decided to invest in a proper purifier. I was wondering…

Loft conversion - building control sign off
Having just converted the loft of my townhouse, I've been told by building control that since the loft floor is more than 7.5 meters (7.7) above ground level, they will only sign-off the conversion if I have a sprinkler system or alternative installed (in case of fire). All townhouses in the Mews are identical and others…

Johnstone's Flortred paint
Does anyone know, please, if it is okay to paint a garage floor with this floor paint a section at a time? It would be difficult to remove everything from the garage at once and we are still having atrocious weather so cant risk shoving everything out under wraps into the garden while the paint dries. I'm just worried that…

Loud bang - heating problem?
Hoping someone can try and help. Yesterday morning we were awoken to an extremely loud bang. It happened round about the same time the heating comes on, or had just come on but at the time I put it down to a wood pigeon flying into the window as we have a bird table not far from the kitchen window and it happens sometimes.…

Painting internal rendered wall that's still a little damp
This wall was rendered last Tuesday & it's mostly dried out, there's just patches left. We're having a wood burner re-installed & unfortunately it's sooner than i wanted - it'll be this week. Ideally i want to get the walls painted up before the wood burner is in. I've almost done the chimney breast face but i've not even…

Water in cellar after rain
We live in a terraced house . Rainwater is entering our cellar when it rains. The drains are at the back of the house and the cellar is at the front of the house. Seems that the water is coming in at the back of the house and going under dining room, (void but no cellar at back of house) ,then appearing in cellar. What is…

Should I demand an invoice from tradesman?
A trader gave me a quote by sms. He then completed the job to my satisfaction and stayed within that quote. However, he didn't provide an invoice, and he's now asking to pay by bank transfer. I'm happy to do that: however, I'm not sure that this is the proper procedure. I'm thinking about unlikely scenarios where he comes…

Coving Help
Hi all, I'm currently in the process of doing up my house after moving in last month. As part of the renovations, we took out a large built in wardrobe and as a consequence of that, the coving going around the room didn't extend behind the wardrobe. The issue with the coving is that it appears to be a totally non-generic…

Monitored Alarm
I am looking at getting a monitored alarm from either ADT, Chubb or SECOM. However none of these companies list their prices/contracts etc. I have read the reviews on all and they are all mixed. Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations from either company? Or if anyone has any information on their costs. I don't…

Want to insure sewing machine
My wife wants to insure an expensive quilting machine which will be on loan from a Community Interest Company. It's not a charity - people voluteer to make quilts for donation to sick babies/infants in hospital. Our house insurer refuses to cover it, and I've had a quote for ~£300 :( which is plain silly as she is only…

Worcester Combi Boiler
Hi, My boiler has suddenly stopped heating the house. The hot water works fine. I've attached a picture (EDIT I'm not allowed to post pictures) of the pressure bar earlier this morning, it seemed high so I went to the store to get a radiator key but having now returned the pressure is at about 2. On the thermostat I…

This is never used as is dangerously high with no fences etc. We had…

New build - no wall insulation
Bought a new build 4 years ago from Miller homes. We've just had some work done and the builder noted we have no wall insulation between our end terrace and the house next door. That's not right, is it, maybe even legally? Can we ask for Miller to now sort it out or has it been too long? Wondering if anyone has had the…
